Hey guys, have you checked out this project called Neurona@Home? Their aim is to better understand the way neurones work in the humand body. The project simulates an artificial brain with 1,000,000 neurons.

Main Facts

  • A human brain contains more than 10.000 million neurons with an average of 10.000 synaptic connections projecting from each neuron to other neurons.
  • Even the mini-brains of some insects are indeed very complex: Honeybee brains contain around 960.000 neurons which give them astounding memory and behavioral repertoire for their size.
  • It is known that the synchronization of the firing of large assemblies of neurons is related to odour discrimination in insects.
  • In Humans synchronous oscillations are also present but they are usually related to higher-order functions such as attention, memory and conscious awareness.
  • The origin and even the role of these oscillations are still poorly understood.

Model key issues

  • We consider a model in which a set of excitatory and inhibitory nodes can activate or deactivate neighbor nodes according to a set of probabilistic rules. The cellular automata neuron is a very simple artifact with only three states: firing, resting or refractory but we are interested in the features of the brain that emerge as a consequence of its complex network structure.
  • To this aim we should consider an artificial brain with 1.000.000 neurons, a number that exceeds the typical size of an insect brain.
Our project's simulations of the cellular automata brain in a random network should allow us to understand:
  • The emergence of brain oscillations as collective firing.
  • The effectiveness of artificial neural networks as discriminant devices.
  • The role of the network structure of brains in information processing.
These WU's can require huge amounts of ram, up to 8GB! The researchers don't want people with too few RAM fail the WU's, so you need to ask for a invite key to join. Looks like a nice project!

Thank you! And it looks like I need more RAM before I start...

    WARNING

Please be aware that, due to the nature of the network being simulated, this project requires a HUGE amount of RAM, between 3 and 6 Gigabytes per Work Unit, and quite likely this quantity will increase in the next months as the investigation goes further. You will need a suitable 64 bit Linux or Windows PC (due to the RAM requirements there is no 32 bit worker available). Because of this, subscription to this project is made only by invitation code upon request of the volunteer.

I viewed this one yesterday... not sure if we need to set up a team... let me know and I'll look into it.  I'll be in Seattle this morning (going to carpet bomb AB! ) KIDDING! However, I will be back later at home this afternoon and will check into it if there is enough interest.

I am intrigued..... saw an article about this a few weeks ago. It didn't say they were making it into a DC project.
Hmmmmmmm. I have the min RAM requirements...

I wouldn't mind trying it out, but I'm not 100 % sure if my PC will be able to handle it.

I've done some fast reading on the forums, and it looks like they researchers work in phases. The first WU's of a phase don't require 'that' much RAM, but the more a phase progresses the more RAM that is needed.

    Anyway, I'm up!

Poked around and we need to have a invite.  Essentially that invite says we have proven to have the required hardware to run the tasks.  Most of us do... I hope.

    Here we go:

"Hello and thank you for your interest on Neurona@Home. It is much appreciated.
First to go the account creation page

    http://falua.cesfelipesegundo.com/Neurona/create_account_form.php

and then you can use the code

*Removed* Please see a Team Captain for this code or the OP of this post. Thank you!!!

to create your account. Feel free to share the code with your friends or team.
The server provides only one or two WU at a time so you can run Neurona@Home with other projects at the same time easily.
For further questions use the forums or write an email to me, I will be happy to help you.
      Regards,
       Javier. "

Apparently the code only is to access the project, not to assign credit, so we're all set!!

Let's not post the code in a post for millions to see. If anyone feels differently please feel free to express that to me. However, if they want folks to apply there must be a reason. And just offering the access to all from a post could look bad to our team.

Thank you all for your understanding. I too have the code, please feel free to PM me for it if you would like...

Sorry about that! Wasn't thinking and in a hurry this am

Boy that was a bonehead move on my part, posting it for all to see. I can't imagine anyone trying to purposely screw us over by ruining wu's. Not in this community anyway. The code has nothing to do with credit. I guess I'm just too trusting.

I've been crunching this project all night. It's a little different.

2600k@4.4 and 8Gig memory. some of the wu's take a couple of minutes and some a couple hours. The progress bar in BAM never moves, always shows 0.00% and and then uploading/waiting to report. On the smaller WU's I'll run 2 at a time and 1 on the larger. At times my memory usage has spiked to over 6gig

I just checked my stats and I have 3 wu's that error-ed out of 63 running or completed. I wonder if that is within normal parameters for this project.
    Still no team to join.

finished 7 so far on a 2600k at 3.5 Ghz, and all have already validated  for a  whooping total of 10 credits .
first one took a whooping 1 1/2 min.

3 more errors for a total of 6 in 80 units. Since our team isn't created yet I'm going to pull out when these are done.

I have about 75 completed and validated, 5 more waiting and 6 errors for a total of 278 credit.

The project doesn't utilize all 4 cores or HT so when I start again I'll try the C2Quad maybe even fire up the dual core Celeron.
