The presentation also confirmed that upcoming Tesla V100 (name is just a guess) would also be designed in SXM2 form factor (which basically confirms it has High-Bandwidth-Memory). Whether Big Volta (aka GV100) would be offered in two variants (computing and gaming-oriented), is yet unknown.

IBM is projecting its Power9 servers to be available beginning in the middle of 2017, with PCWorld reporting that the new processor lineup will include support for NVLINK 2.0 technology. Each NVLINK lane will communicate at 25Gbps, up from 20Gbps in the first iteration. With eight differential lanes, this translates to a 400Gbps (50GB/s) bi-directional link between CPUs and GPUs, or about 25 percent more performance if the information is correct.

and power9 chips are ready next year

The company offers details about its upcoming Power chip at the Hot Chips conference

presentation on Nvidia's website says NVLink 2.0 will be in GPUs code-named Volta, which also will come out next year.
Each NVLink 2.0 lane in the Power9 chip will communicate at 25Gbps (bits per second), seven to 10 times the speed of PCI-Express 3.0, according to IBM. Power9 will have multiple communication lanes for NVLink 2.0, and they could provide massive throughput when combined.

so Volta next year - no refresh?

it appears volta will be able to handle 8k

it appears that the GPU can handle two video recordings of 8K simultaneous HDR.
It could be the capabilities offered are far above the need for 4K as the current trend.
also has a new video accelerator

    source from Netherlands GTC
    and confirmed from Keynote speech

volta is also on 16nm FF

Expect a very short refresh of pascal because Nvidia own roadmap puts full release of volta before 2018

as i said GV100 may GTC - consumer volta cards 3-4 months later just before Xmas

and confirmed from  GTC europe keynote .... fall/winter right from jen's own mouth

What would you say that for people to actually use NVLINK would require a brand new, up-to-date PC in order to use it?

    should be pcie 4.0
but there is plenty of room in pcie3.0 yet
for something like computational and not GPU/video - more bandwidth and crosstalk amongst the gpus more important

so for home users no - current  will be fine - more up to date the better tho

NVlink will be solely HPC   i.e. server

I just might have seen some Einstein material from Nvidia

just to give you some insight im going to post some april gtc 2016 material first

    16k video requires 32GB(8k screen)x4 - 128GB min spec
look a 4TB/s transfer rate to do 30FPS

if this information is correct  I found a Exascale PDF paper- showing a dual CPU (im assuming arm) with 8 GPUs with 8-hi stack HBM3
    (i know it's hbm3 because it's 512GB/s transfer rate - hbm2 is 256B/s) - assuming 4gb Min to 16GB max per HBM chip thats 32GB-128GB per GPU
and 4 GPUs. per wafer - so the math min 128GB- 512GB HBM 3 on a single wafer
let alone the horsepower of this baby

man oh! man .... dream of the ultimate GPU

You ask me i don't think we are ready for this stuff - let alone the architecture
ask yourself how to do transfer 128GB of video per frame with 20TB hd's ..30 frames would require like 3+ TB of HD space just for 1 sec

major changes have to come with the hardware just from a standpoint of HD (which i think will be gone)and SSD like asking for 2000TB drives and bandwodth improvement

Not even pushing PCI 3.0, if Nvidia would start caring about quality with their GPU drivers, I might look at Nvidia again, till then, who cares about faster tech....

I think you have that reversed, and a little off-track... I corrected it a little bit for you. Nvidia has the best driver support. Let me repeat that, the best "driver support". It doesn't mean that every driver is going to be great; it's just not going to happen. Nvidia, however, does have better driver support than AMD can ever dream about.
