I don't know about the hype made over this. AMD is still using 28nm for GPU lithography process, so unless they pull a Fermi refresh in terms of improving performance per Watt, I don't expect HD9000's flagship to be more than 20-30% better than the previous, which is about where GTX780/Titan stands right now. If anything the Maxwell flagship could be cheaper but I'm on the doubting side of whether it will be faster than Titan unless AMD will bring that type of threat seeing how much ground they have to make up versus nVidia.

Argh, was waiting for 9000 series but might as well just wait until maxwell now.

I think I'm just going to get a GTX 760 seems fast enough to game on everything and wait till the end of the year and get me video card. (was going to get a 780 FTW/Classy but now I think I might just wait.)

I don't see maxwell this year ot 1st half of next year, which is still soon enough. This might also dictate how well the 700 series sells when the 9000 is released. Or......... They can drop the price of the Titan to $500 to compete

(was going to get a 780 FTW/Classy but now I think I might just wait.) Yeah I would say a 760 is a safe bet for sure. It's pretty much a $250 GTX 670, without the 70C throttling limiter. And we all know a 670 can still hold it's own even today.

There is a probability I might go for AMD instead of nVidia and it will have nothing to do with performance or price, rather at least AMD allows for the single-slot option without the dual DVI ports that nVidia adds on all their cards. If you wanted to use a single-slot waterblock, pre-Kepler, there was space of another card in between, for instance, EVGA's GTX580 3GB HC2; whereas nVidia's pair of DVI arrangement is too close to the golderfinger side and you can't put another card in between. I still have a GTX260 and compared to that it really doesn't matter what I upgrade to, so performance isn't going to be a consideration for future graphics card choice. I will prefer a single-slot modability and unless EVGA makes a special future card without dual DVI, more than likely I'm going to AMD.

I agree. I thought the 580 HC and Classy HC cards were sexy! And then I see the new HCs with that hump for another DVI and frown.

dukenuke88 What do you plan to put under the GPU? Your motherboard doesn't have enough PCI-E slots? For me, I just don't like dual-slot. If I were to keep my X58, then I'll probably put other PCIe cards in between like an SSD card, sound card, a tv tuner, USB 3.0 adapter or SATA 6Gbps adapter, or PhysX. I hope nVidia ditches dual-DVI for a series of mini-HDMI or mini-Displayports, whatever to allow the video ports themselves to take up a single slot space. Granted only reference AMD cards respect single-slot, many other non-ref have the same dual-DVI stack. It has actually crossed my mind to risk voiding warranty by unsoldering the dual-DVI and replacing it with a single-DVI from another older card, that is how much I despise nVidia's move, but it seems is easier to grab an AMD reference card.

People are not waiting for the HD9000 cards.. Like me they are waiting for the frame pacing driver that releases July 31 Then everyone that has a pair of HD7950/70 will have HD7990 preformance and at very low cost as the HD7950 has been seen at $259 which as we all know is enough for BF 4

Did you hear that the HD7990 is discontinued already? And the rumors are coming that the HD9000 series will slay the 700 series, which is pushing nVidia to release Maxwell and stay on the same node...

Kind of interesting so we'll see. At the same time though, isn't HD 9970 suppose to equal the GTX 780? I heard the 9970 is still using 28nm but more matured and much faster clocks than a 7970GHZ.

Yes the 9970 is still GCN. However when you watched how the 7970 vs 680 ended, AMD pulled their pants up and did work. The only issue that came out of all this was the frame metering problem. Either ways the AMD equaled and did better IMO vs nVidia in the 7000 vs 600. And looking at it now the 9970 might be 10% out the gate faster than the GTX 780.

Rei86And looking at it now the 9970 might be 10% out the gate faster than the GTX 780. Potentially, based on the rumors of the core/ALU count being higher than 2304 and 2560 for the 9970. The GPU might be much faster than the complete Titan die and might be as fast or slightly slower than GM104. While being half a year early meaning there is enough time in the pipe for a stop gap generation. What is suppose to happen: Volcanic Islands - 9990/9970/9950 Sea Islands(Rebrands) - 9870/9850/9770/9750/etc. Pretty much like the 6000 series.

I'm anxious to see how Maxwell unfolds. Will NV release a mid range GPU and label it top dog? Just like how they did with the 600 series? I'm hoping not, because I wanna be ready for Fallout 4, GTA 5, and whatever other epic games in 2014 on my 4k monitor :)
