I was reading some interesting post from CraptacularOne (br worthy) on VRAM usage.

CraptacularOne
To give you an ideal of the kinds of settings and resolution you'll need to surpass even 1GB of VRAM, it wasn't till I started using 3 monitors at 1680x1050 resolution each for a combined resolution of 5040x1050 that I started to go up an over 1GB of VRAM of my cards. At the time I was using 3 GTX470's. I have since upgraded my monitors to 3 2560x1600 resolution screens for a combined resolution of 7680x1600 and now I have 3 GTX480's. And even at that mind numbing resolution, my games are only using between 1.2 - 1.4GB VRAM. And that's in some of the latest games like Dirt 2, Battlefield BC2, Mafia II, AVP and Medal of Honor with settings maxed with 2x AA.

I agree.. He knows his stuff... The reason for my comment is easy... Crysis 2... It is coming... New games this next year will push our systems harder, and I HATE my systems slowing me down.... lol I am thinking longer term is all. Spending @1000-$1200 ish for 10-20% gaming increase is not enough of a gain unless something else adds value.

For example... If we are running 60fps and gain to 72fps in the AVG, not bad at all. But going from 200fps to 220.. well that is just bragging rights. We cannot "See" it. This assumes of course that everything is already cranked up of course... Running Surround really puts the stress on these GPU's. I like that...

I for one cannot wait till these are in the hands of a few of our members so we can see the true results and not "Paper" or "Synthetic" benchmarks... Looks to be a fun winter!!!

I don't know how true this is but if it is true ,, then it makes since why Nvidia needs to put rush on this card to get the sales in before 6970 is here..

China has it for pre-order. Cost is 3888.00  renminbi (RMB). Which equals about $582 in U.S. dollars.

Cool.  And notice the power connectors.  One 6-pin and one 8-pin.  So the TDP is between 250W and 300W.  The GTX 480's is 250W but when pushed in Furmark it can consume about 300W of power.

If you haven't noticed, that's the exact same GTX 480 PCB. From the GTX 580 images you can clearly see that the 580 PCB doesn't have holes in it.

Re:NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 Full Specs and Release Date 2010/10/31 12:46:48 (permalink)
I'm with AB on the VRAM issue. If they are only releasing it with 1.5GB then there is little reason for me to even consider it. They could have released it with 3GB on it's 384bit bus and I would be very interested.

As was pointed out by my post in that other thread: I'm consistently seeing between 1.2 - 1.4GB VRAM usage on my cards while in surround at 7680x1600. That doesn't leave me with a lot of head room for newer more demanding titles.

I hope Nvidia releases a 3GB high end card for those of use that are playing in surround. Or I will be looking at other options for my next upgrade and may end up with some Cayman cards in my system as I'm sure they will have at the very least a 2GB VRAM card available.

As for calling this card a 500 series I really don't agree with the name change. It's still a GF100 series GPU and is essentially what they wanted out of the original GTX480 with 512 cores and higher clocks. In my opinion they should have just called this a GTX485 and not made a whole new series just for this. Yes this card may be up to 20% faster than a stock GTX480 but that is also with the GTX580's higher clock speed. I'm sure if you clock a GTX480 and a GTX580 at the same speed the difference will be no where near as profound.

I agree with both points.  3GB of video memory would have been great, now we will have to hope that subvendors will release such GTX 580s.  GTX 485 is a more fitting name for it too.  And as SirWaWa brought up, a different cooling solution would have been nice to see.  I frequent many hardware forums and most people don't prefer the blower style cooling since it is less effective for cooling the GPU, and much louder.

That's my main premise for this card as well, the full 512 cores would be nice, but How much of a PPD you think 32 more cores will have compared to the 14-16k the 480 currently gets while folding.

I will either find a way, or make one.

With the 911/925 pointer wu's they won't matter much at all. With those wu's it seems to be clock speed is most important, but on the P10632 (611 pointers) wu's the extra cores make a big difference.

Then it would not be so beneficial for me sadly, even though it looks like an even bigger beast I still like my heat pipes :p

I will either find a way, or make one.

Why couldnt they put 2g's of memory for us surround guys
or i would sell mine and pull the trigger and get these!!!

Because NVIDIA is clueless about surround needs. BTW, the 6970 is 2GB memory by default.

Just to rehash the obvious...
NVIDIA Surround can't do two displays, only three. AMD EyeFinity can do 2-6 displays.
NVIDIA Surround can't individually color correct each display, AMD EyeFinity can.
NVIDIA Surround requires two or more like video cards, AMD EyeFinity can be done with a single card.
The list goes on...

The only reason I'd consider these is if they use less power then my 480's.  I don't want to buy new waterblocks already.... maybe the 480 blocks will fit?  I doubt it....

3900X 4.5 GHZ on an Asus Hero
32 GB 3600 MHZ Corsair RGB Pro DDR4 RAM
1 EVGA 3090 XC3 soon to be Watercooled
2 2GB Corsair MP600's
HX1000 with custom sleaving

If the PCBs really are the same then they should fit.  But then again, I don't think GTX 280 blocks fit GTX 285s.  Since the GTX 580 has a 6-pin and 8-pin PCI-E connector just like the GTX 480, power consumption is in the same ball park as the GTX 480.  So to those of us with GTX 480s, no need to upgrade to the GTX 580.  A decent overclock on the GTX 480 will bring us above a stock GTX 580.  Overclocking potential on the GTX 580 will be interesting but since it's an enthusiast card with a TDP of at least 250W, heat will be in the way for many folks.
