Microsoft Replaces the Blue Screen of Death with the Black Screen of Death | TechPowerUp Microsoft has updated the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) in the latest Windows 11 preview build to now be the Black Screen of Death. The Blue Screen of Death has been included since Windows 1.0 was released in 1985 and has received various changes over the years adding error codes, the sad face, and most recently in 2016 QR codes. The new Black Screen of Death was likely introduced to blend better with modern systems and is functionally identical to the previous version. Microsoft had previously introduced the Green Screen of Death for Windows Insider Preview Builds so if you are running the Windows 11 preview and want to enable the updated BSOD you can set the DisplayPreReleaseColor Variable to 0 in the registry editor (HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl) and reboot. I think black is a nice change of color for screen of death.

I mean, how often do you even see this anymore? It was relatively common back XP-ish when a crash meant you could still bring up the task manager (or was 95 the last edition that did that? I can't recall), but since then I almost never run into it. Generally crashes are either blackscreens, or just give a program specific error message/close it.

Yeah I'm not happy with the change. As a LAN Admin this is going to create MORE frustration dealing with those types of end users that can't explain to me what happened in plain English...

You have 2 options: give them a free day or tell them to take their cell phones and send you a screenshot of the screen message

They should have gone for a beige screen of death (so as not to change the BSOD acronym). I am wondering - does the new BSOD reflect your default Windows color mode (dark vs light) - maybe it's still a blue screen if you have the light mode? I noticed a few weird things yesterday after a fresh Windows install, the color mode even changed by itself at one point (or maybe it was the app color mode).

MS in 2021, creating solutions to problems that don't exist. A bunch of MS middle management types sitting around a conference table thinking changing the color of the background of BSODs should be part of the next version update. Talk about running out of excuses to patch twice a year to push SaaS on the consumer market.

that's a harsh statement but i understand ya! a lot is changing actually if we think about it carerfully games overall are just losing tons of quality year by year where they're just spit out from companies... half finished full of bugs and at ludicrous prices at same time building a PC has become very expensive as people nowadays only think in crypto and not mainly in gaming plus the scalpers who ruin hardware stock worldwide by buying everything so..later on they sell it at higher prices or just mine crypto (the new trend and it wont go away) and now micro$oft wants force the world (eventually will happen in the future) to install adware in our machines camouflaged as an OS version 11 or 12 or whatever..... taking away a lot of the control we had in previous windows versions its sad really. just yesterday or the day before my GF said she doesn't understand wasting thousands of euros in a system ( like i did in 2019) so that once in a while i can be able to play handful of games that are not that good anyway (she also hates w10) im almost in my 40's and honestly start to feel the same about pc gaming in the last year...

yeah well .. but..actually no! i usually buy new parts every 5 to 7 years. so that would not make a difference but hey !! maybe scalpers are banned from the planet and we can all have a fair pricing for pc parts ( not likely no) as for "PC gamer 4 life" ///// i told that to my self 10 years ago and now i might change my mind. everything is really changing and I'm not gonna be a slave of the the PC parts market to be able to play less and less quality games. there are tons of other hobbies out there and way less expensive!

I was thinking about this change and was wondering how hard would it be for Microsoft just to let an IT guy pick the background color they want for the message of death when Windows installs. To me that makes the most sense since if someone contacts me and tells me the background is orange, red or pink I would know it's the crash screen I set up and not something else.
