Chromium-Based Microsof Edge Released

As announced previously, the long-awaited new Microsoft Edge Chromium-based browser has been released.  For consumers, it will be installed in a future update to Windows 10, following a measured roll-out via Windows Update over the next several months. The Windows Update schedule for Windows 10 versions is available at Windows updates for Microsoft Edge | Microsoft Docs.

Having daily used the development version of Microsoft Edge since it was initially made available, the Chromium-based version has proved to be a definite improvement.  Learn about the new features by following the "Learn More" links at Microsoft Edge Browser Features.

If you don't want to wait for Windows Update, you can download the new Edge browser today.  It is available for Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, macOS, iOS and Android from the download page at Download New Microsoft Edge Browser | Microsoft. Click the arrow to select the version for your device.

Re: MS Edge to go Chromium starting Wednesday 2020/01/16 01:32:34 (permalink)
I downloaded the New Edge. It takes no time at all and as usual the setup is a bit cumbersome and different but not too bad.

The GOOD:
It is much faster.

The bad:
You have to make a few changes to get some things back the way you like it if it allows you to, but some things (minor preferences might not be the same as before) There are some minor settings listed in settings that are not yet functional but "will be soon."

The really bad!
The only really bad thing I encountered was the Favorites. I had several hundred favorites arranged in folders and sub-folders that were decimated into individual links that makes it impossible to use. I will have to restore my drive back to a clone from a couple of days ago, save an export of my Favorites, and then after reinstalling the New Edge delete all the decimated favorites and import the saved favorites.

The only other bad thing about the Favorites after that is how once you try to access a link in a sub folder, the menu will expand and cover other parts of the Favorites list making it hard to navigate. For me Windows favorites seems to be overlooked and has become sloppy and cumbersome. It has only gotten worse with the New Edge but can be partially fixed after installing if you plan ahead.

So, make a copy of your Favorites before installing the New Edge as you probably will have to use it afterwards.

In all though it is much faster.

Yep. The Favorites is a mess again.

You definitely need to export your favorites to file for the restore after installing the New Edge. Not difficult but should not be necessary.

One other thing MS changed for no good reason is the Full Page function. F11 still works as before however they have taken away the ability to move the cursor to the top of the page to drop down the tab bar. Now a silly big "X" appears, you click on it and the tab bar drops down. Problem is you then have to hit F11 to get the full screen displayed.

The Edge favorites are stored via a Microsoft server or as they put it synced and not locally on the hard drive. I found this out the hard way over a year ago and both times when I need them back does not work as intended for me.

Huh, yeah I see going full screen does not allow access anything above window like open tabs, extensions or address bar and hitting the X just reverts it back normal size?

Your favorites are not automatically stored on your hard drive as you say, but that doesn't prevent you from saving them on your hard drive. I dont like using the Cloud so much so I save my favorites on my drive by selecting in settings the option

Favorites/manage favorites/export favorites

A pop up will open. Create a folder and name it MS Favorites then save the exported file in the folder you created. You can then restore your favorites or install them on another computer.

If you install the New Edge the favorites you once had will be messed up. If this happens to you you can delete all the links in the New Edge and then Import the Favorites you saved back into the New Edge. You Favorites will then be as you remembered them earlier.

So yes, you can save your favorites onto you drive.

But or you sure this could have been done with the old EdgeHTML?

Yes, with the old Edge you could save your favorites by exporting them to a file.

Overall it's an improvement I feel but it really depends on how you feel as to if it's the right browser for you.

The new browser doesn't import your favorites from the Chrome beta but you can copy the contents of the user folder from the beta folder to the final version user folder and it works but changes the icon, but that's a minor bug.

This maybe helpful for some How to Stop Microsoft From Testing New Features in Edge.

Also, don't try to add Edge extensions from the Microsoft Store app ha-ha it doesn't work and than you will need to find to manual remove them. 😁

It's nice that you can check it out and if you don't like it, you can go to "Programs/Features" and uninstall it.  It will revert back to the previous MS Edge app as it was.

How about giving us back control over our own cookies, ad-blocking and tracking in our browsers and Windows OS!!!!!

The New Edge has a lot more privacy and blocking settings you can control.

And on top of that one can add Google Chrome extensions to the new Edge and almost set it up to equal that of Firefox.

Edit: Such as Cookie AutoDelete.

But cookies are an old battle the new front is canvas fingerprinting.

The New Edge is actually great compared to the Old Edge.

NE downloads much faster, has a lot more tracking and blocking abilities, the favorites folder doesn't slow down - delay opening after the browser is opened for an hour or so, and while the Favorites was a return to a decade or more ago functionality (looks) it grows on you. One thing about the Favorites in NE is that you need to rename a link before saving a new link into Favorites. No more right clicking and remaning. You can still rename a link later but you have to go through Manage Favorites in settings.

Also if you stream with ATT Now you can now use the New Edge.

I also noticed that after setting the Privacy and Blocking settings my junk mail has decreased by 95 percent. I was getting A LOT of junk mail and now almost nothing. Maybe coincidental but junk mail has dropped off unbelievably so. At least until the spammers find a work around.

Ah.. no? That to do with your email provider and little to do with any one of the internet browsers you use.

Edit: Well maybe my experience different?
