TechPowerUp - LEAK: Intel Alder Lake Doesn't Look Like an Overclocker’s Dream “Another day, another Intel Alder Lake leak, although this time it seems to be the same Core i9-12900K retail CPU that is being tested in China. Some additional details have been provided on its ability to overclock and although it's perfectly possible to overclock these upcoming CPUs from Intel, it's going to be hard to cool them, even for very small gains in clock speeds. An all core P-core overclock, with the E-cores at default requires quite the Voltage bump as well, since according to the leaked information, going from 4.9 GHz and a power draw of 233 Watts, with a CPU Voltage of 1.275 V to 5.2 GHz, sees a jump of almost 100 Watts. The CPU Voltage also has to be bumped to 1.38 V in the sample used. However, pushing the CPU to 5.3 GHz requires 1.44 V and pushes the CPU power to a massive 400 W, which is high-end GPU territory. That said, we're hearing that not all CPUs need this high Voltage to hit 5.2 GHz, although we also understand that 5.3 GHz is not a speed that will be easily attained. Apparently the best way to get the most performance out of these news CPUs will be to tune the turbo settings, rather than to try and overclock them.” My thoughts: I would wait until the CPUs are released and are being tested and overclocked by more people, particularly when it comes to results and stability.

Agreed. Third party reviews are what I am waiting for.

Above, I've just included the only screen shot available. This could just be a case of raise clock speed and throw voltage at the CPU to see if we can get it to boot. There is no other info as to ram, MB, etc.

This is my issue with the big/little core concept they're trying to implement. It's not going to work well with heat and power efficiency like they're hoping.

Seams like a bunk article. "Going to be hard to cool them.." , with no mention of what coolers are being used... which to my understanding, all Alder lakes will require new cooling options since the processors are a different size/thickness than current CPUs...

I bet they are only running on stock aircooling.

The i9-12900K processor does not come with a "stock cooler", however you did say "stock aircooling". So do you mean tested without any cpu cooler?

Or they put an LGA1200 socket cooler on it (which wouldn't fit properly), which would also explain why it might be "hard to cool".

^Well considering that the majority of AIO brands are giving away LGA1700 adapters for free, this, as you pointed out, is kinda of a duh article. Though, there will be those who try it.

without specifics like BIOS setting, Hardware used & many, many other details -- Yawn, OK - it did not OC much by bruit force ... who is really surprised "all core & OC " ... that is not going to work the same with Hybrid cores .... then of course is this a "retail sample" & there is always the Silicon Lottery Bottom line - Factory CPU.... OC - are pretty good currently @ stock settings .. not much is left for crude bruit force OC gains
