My evga 280 clc could tame a 9900k at 5ghz 1.250v. I bought a kraken for the better audible levels and it seems my 9900K hits 99c in 5 seconds of prime. I have repasted the cpu with mx4. Any ideas how to tell if this aio is faulty? Im going to assume it is.

No offense intended but is it installed correctly. Not all AIOs can be mounted the same way as the suction line and reservoir need to be in the proper positions.
Also do you hear a bad gurgle, may have not enough liquid?

I have the X61 and I had the same issues the first time I mounted it. Ran way too hot. Took out the retention bracket and re-mounted it with new TIM; haven't had any issues since. Be sure you tighten the screws on alternating sides for best contacts.

yeah, I suspect a mounting issue ..and no offense intended with that statement.....I've incorrectly installed multiple items in my 60 years of life.... it happens.

We do not know your experience level ... just tossing Ideas your way as mentioned above keeping the CPU cooler flat is important I usually hold the radiator above the pump, before mounting radiator & run the pump - (No fans) just to check that air is not causing cavitation in the pump before mounting rad. Once rad is mounted tipping the PC case can help move air, as the trapped air is always trying to rise .... this is what I do on my custom loop builds If your going to tip the PC, make sure you have disconnected all spinning drives first - to protect the drives - before you start the PC is pump running at correct RPM ? Check header & BIOS Voltage settings --> sometime people forget to remove the protective film on the cooler / block - it happens

Its the same mounting as an evga clc. It is not mounted incorrectly. I have a lian li 011 dynamic and its mounted to the top. I think it may just be a weak pump/low pressure.

I've had one AIO that was bad out of the box ..... Swiftech ... bad connection on one wire to the pump Can you hear the pump running ? One hose much cooler than the other ? What pump RPM rage have you tested at ? https://www.nzxt.com/products/kraken-x73Motor Speed & Power: 800 – 2,800 + 300 RPM, 12V DC, 0.3A

Download CAM & check the pump & fan speeds. See if you can't manually set them to see if that helps the situation. I know when the profile defaulted to "silent" mode it barely cooled the CPU at all. That might be what's happening.

I will install cam later. For the most part the cpu stays cool at gaming ect but any encoding/benchmark and it spikes way too hot. May even test my clc again.

LOL CAM determine how efficient AIO is. Pump and fans rpm are CAM controlled. Using X73 for 2 years just reapplied paste after 15 months.

So your saying ? --> Default from Mfg is Not max pump & fans

You dont have to have cam installed. I have heard really really bad things about it. I didnt yse evgas software either but damn is it an underrated product.

Default from Mfg maxed pump & fans??? Maxed pump and fans is just a waste, noisy, shortening product lifespan, name it. I use customized curve. Higher temp triggers higher pump & fan revs. Some folks had a problem with previous CAM version. Current 14.4.0 works like charm. Almost 2 years quiet and cooled CPU & GPU

I mounted it to the back of the case next to the glass panel and now it hits 70 degrees max load at 5ghz. Much much better.

Great, that is solid temperature. Now you can play with CAM, by slowing pump and fans when idle.

I feel your pain with the weaker than expected performance. I splurged on an EK AIO 360 to "upgrade" my cooling and it's been nothing but a horror story. I remounted mine 6 times, got a perfect mount the last time & it still didn't perform better than my 280mm Thermaltake unit, so I assumed it was defective, and returned it for an exchange... the "replacement" came in today, and this is what it looked like: The outer UPS box is 100% undamaged, so someone seriously packaged it at the EK warehouse, like that. Needless to say me & EK are having a chat and if they don't send me a prepaid return label this time (Yeah, I had to pay for the return when it was a defective unit, that figures), heads are gonna roll. If I were you I'd return your unit for an exchange though, sounds like a defective one to me for sure.
