I have had my GTX 1060 for about a year or a year and a half now. It worked fine until very recently. However, now, there is an 80% chance that when I try to boot, it throws this error: PLEASE POWER DOWN PCIe POWER CABLE(S) FOR THIS GRAPHICS CARD.
If I turn it off, unbutton the case, and fiddle around with the power adapter for a while, it eventually works. If I button it up again and use it for a bit, it's fine again. However, when I shut it down, and try to turn it back on, the error comes back.
What could cause this?

Faulty power supply? Also Could be losse connectors on the gpu? have you tried different pcie power connectors if your power supply included them? Just some gusses to throw out there

I have tried different PCIe power connectors. Same result. I'm aware that it's possible that the power supply is faulty, but I can't confirm it.

After removing the graphics card and taking a closer look, I noticed some visible physical damage to the pins.  I'm likely going to have to replace the card. However, something else likely caused the damage itself, so I'll have to replace that, too. Do you guys have any ideas on what kind of damage this is, and what might cause it?

I showed the actual card to my roommate, who is an electrical engineer. We live in Upstate New York, which regularly has late-night humidities in the mid 80's. We face extreme humidity. He thinks this is caused by corrosion. Nothing in the system was faulty, but living in a basement where the humidity goes to 80% or higher on a regular basis will FUBAR any electronics that require pins. Basically, I can't have nice electronics until this gets dealt with, which it won't, since I rent.

You could try cleaning it off with rubbing alcohol but the damage is probably done. EVGA has taken pitty one people before but it's not the normal thing. But it's worth asking to see what support says

It's a desert but we have a lot of grass and trees locals have planted and water still runs for lawns so for now that keeps the humidity up in town

Yeah man. I'm hopeful that I can rectify this. I used a bit of isopropyl alcohol and an unused toothbrush to get some of the corrosion off:  I took a look inside the PCIe port and found no evidence of internal corrosion. How long should I wait for the isopropyl alcohol to dry before I give it a shot?

Looks clean now.

Unfortunately, it yielded the same message. Now, I tried a couple things. Namely, changing which PCIe port it was in first. No change. Then I tried something dangerous. Something that I'm aware might void the warranty (which expired anyhow); I unplugged it while the "PLEASE POWER DOWN..." message was on the screen, but nothing else was. That is, I let the rest of the system keep going and I just cut the video card off of power by yanking the cord out of it.That changed something: it made the screen go blank. So it knew that it had been cut off of power! Now, my gut is telling me that the card itself is what's wrong, and here's why: it has a concept of being powered by the PSU vs not being powered by the PSU. There are two ways I can think of that would realistically still have this be the PSU being faulty: 1) some of the pins in the 6-pin female of my GeForce 1060 connect, but not all, or 2) The PSU wires all connect, but they output the wrong wattage (either voltage is off or amperage is off and the video card can tell) Short of buying a new video card or PSU, how can I test for these two possibilities? Any ideas?

You tried a different psu port... but did you try a different port & cable?
My PSU only comes with one PCIe cable that has two nodes on it.

It doesn't. It has two 6+2 plugs, but they're from the same cable; I tried both. It also comes with a diagram illustrating how both of the plugs are on the same cable:

Yep, just seen a video of the psu. I'd just replace it with a better unit. Testing the video card in another system will let you know where the problem is coming from.

My guess is the power supply needs to go. The caps in it are bad. That's why sometimes it works and sometimes not. Left alone long enough they charge enough to boot but then fail.
Get a quality gold rated psu from brands like evga,corsair.. 750watt min.
The caps age and after a few years it won't put out it's rated wattage anymore.

The longer this thread goes on, the more it seems like there's a consensus that the PSU is shot. I suppose I just lucked out these past two years. If your bud is a electrical engineer he most likely has a multimeter... have him back probe the pci-e wires on the gpu when its running, load and idle check, and see if the voltages are correct. That will tell you whether the psu is holding its 12 volt rail power correctly or not and you can work it back from there. That's the easiest way to know for sure.... if you really want to know if its the psu.

Good idea. I have a multimeter... if I can find it. They also have specialized tools for testing PSUs. I might order one just because it's nice to have easy ways to determine if something functions or not.

Also a best buy would have some power supplies in store. Could grab one to test. If you're is fine return it.

The picture of the card you posted was very dusty...too much for only a year worth of use. Once you get this sorted out, you need to work on your case airflow and keep that much dust from getting inside the case.
Also - I live in Florida (grew up in upstate NY)...your humidity is nothing compared to Florida - hehe. My machines run 24/7, and I have never had corrosion on any plug/socket/connector/etc. However, I do manage the dust in my systems (i.e. positive air flow with intake filters).
I would bet the power supply is faulty too.
