For those complaining about how horrible it is removing the thermal putty, a dummies guide to solving the problem the simple way:

SPREAD your paste for guaranteed coverage of the entire die. I use an old debit card or hotel room key for smooth even coverage:

Well this is silly :-(

I was going to run one water cooled one air cooled until the rest of my blocks show up, buutt, I found a point of failure :-(

Sorry you found that leak, but It's better to repair a leaking roof than a collapsed roof.

Also, weren't you suppose to return that hotel key card?

Glad somebody posted how they get off the thermal putty from the VRAM, a lot less frightening than some others have portrayed (that's exactly the way I was going to do mine anyway).

Did you install the thermal pads directly to the VRAM (and other components) on the rear of the card or simply to the backplate? I ask because some of the early backplates appear to be off by ½" in their pad placement. I was expecting an email stating mine had shipped this week and am wondering if the delay (which EK states is specifically due to the backplates) is caused by having to retool to alleviate this problem.

Now a chance to try some of the Flexseal stuff from the commercials. It will stop a leaky boat so who knows. Schmear some on there for a temporary fix.

I put the VRM pads directly on the VRM.

I did notice some people complain about the insane quantity of screws and thermal pads. EKWB includes the thermal pads for a 3080 and a 3090, as well as screws for the black backplate and a nickel backplate.. I am more concerned as to why they sent a set of silver screws with a black backplate than I am with Cem yea thermal pads lol.

^^^^ Pretty much the exact same step by step I went through....my only "little" complaint was one of those screw / nut combos on the GPU are in a tought spot...easy to disassemble but going to be a bit tricky getting it back on whenever I re-install the Air Cooler.

What did you use to clean the thermal puddy off the VRM areas so nicely?

For mine I used tip a tiny screw driver initially....then tooth pick...then a little alcohol with a twisted up corner of paper coffee filter, final polish with a q tip and some compressed air........PCB like his was spotless.....was surprised to see that thermal puddy though, its a first!

Nice and good job detecting the leak early. Nice tip on using coffee filter to clean off the putty

I will add to the tips:
-Be careful when removing the stock cooler, don't bend the PCB.
-Use the proper thermal pad thickness for each component.
-Don't overtorque the screws on the block.
There are a couple threads on the front page right now about dead cards after waterblock install. It seems like the common point is that the user bent the PCB during installation and removal. These boards are much more complex than previous generations due to GDDR6X routing and thus probably use more layers, so the likelihood of breaking or shorting internal traces is higher. Also could be a weak solder point underneath a component failing.
