but will that fix  my issue? i dont understand why it's running dual instead of triple. You think i should try another CPU or maybe RMA the board?

Do you have another CPU you could try?Or borrow? Thats where I would go next.

yeah, no other CPU i can borrow.

microcenter is near me, i can pick up the i7 950 for 200 bucks

then i can probably sell the i7 920 somewhere. i dono... i never overclocked it nor had it overheat! Gosh i hope it's not the CPU..... the board would be better since it has lifetime warranty.

Microcenter is VERY good with returns. Usually no questions asked. I would say try the 950,and take it back if no luck. For 200.00 it's a better CPU than the 920 IMO.

just an update,

I tried each ram stick in slot 1 and it works fine

BUT!

When i add it to slots 1 and 3 to use as dual channel. it doesnt post, nothing shows up on the screen. I thought u can run dual channel if u use just slots 1 and 3 (the 1st 2 green slots from the left.)

so, u think it's the board????

If you are sure the ram is working (all sticks), that  only leaves the board or the cpu. I saw in a previous post that you were thinking about trying a difrent CPU, How did that work for you, were this round of tests on the new CPU ? If you want to RMA the board that would be a option, if the new one didn't work you would know it was the CPU, but then again reseating it could fix it also, ( all the bord is is a series of sockets to put your ram in, traces to connect the ram to the cpu, ( which contains your memory controler), and a socket for the cpu to sit in. A poor conection at any of the sockets will show the same symptoms as a failed componant, a short at any of those connections will show bad as well.

loosen the bracket that mounts your CPU cooler to the motherboard, it may be to tight. I've had the same issue before, and loosening the bracket made the third stick show up. May work for you as well. :)

if the heat sink is too tight, the motherboard will flex a little bit. Very hard to notice without a straight edge. The motherboard flexing may cause a few contacts not to mate/ie they work loose from the PCB, loosening the bracket makes them reconnect, thus flattening the boards profile.

I'm sure K meant open or ground.

Are dirt, dust or moisture present near any slot or socket?

Are there any signs of overheating on the back of the MOBO from the area of the RAM slots to the CPU? Anywhere from caramel to black spots in color.
Also, I'm in with daveyd007 on tension of the H/S mount

theanimedude :  Go into the bios and select reset to defaults , save and exit / reboot , and note what the post sequence shows as per memory speed ( ie : 1333 or 1600mhz ) - as I see from your subsequent settings post that your memory speed is [1866mhz / 2:10] .  That suggests that the memory target speed is 1866mhz , while it should be 1333mhz (with your current memory) or lower.  You should then also see a (2T) command rate , and Triple in the Eleet utility.

It says 1333mhz. 2:10 is 133mhz isnt it???

i'll try loosening the bracket. that may be it. I thought u had to make sure those components were tight on. good time for me to reapply the thermal paste. I bought rosewill thermal paste and never used it.

For if it still doesnt work, then i'll try out an i7 950.

Re:Help! why is my system running Dual channel, not triple???? 2011/02/04 07:34:04 (permalink)
Do not go by what the BIOS is telling you on memory speed, BIOS relates everything to a stock clock, If you are running your clock at 133.3 stock, than a 2:10 is 10 X 133.3 or 1333. If however you have changed your clock you will need to adjust, I suspect the information posted on post # 22 is just wrong , a cut and past error, as there is no way to get 1866 memory with a 2:10, unless your running 190. clock speed. E-leet in post 12 is showing 1600, Because it's DDR, E-leet shows 1/2 your memory speed. There may be some confusion because of the pics, and changes you have made along the way.
I do suspect loosing the cooler will solve your issue, unless a pin got bent along the way. or the cooler frame is shorting a pin on the CPU.

ah yes, i did play around with the RAM, all i did was raise it to 1600 but changed it back to 1333. I'll take another CPU-Z screen shot when i get home from work.

It will SUCK if the pin got bent. seriously!!!!
