HeavyHemi Generally you can fix this issue by doing an 'in place upgrade install'. In other words put your OS install disk in, start setup and when it asks you the type of install, just select upgrade. This will leave all your programs intact and you'll only need to apply the Windows updates. Oh sweet, thought I was doomed! Thanks for the heads up on that, I'll give it a shot in the morning. Didn't mean to get off topic, but I sure do appreciate the tip!

mokazhar unfortunately i cant recommend the old drivers for new games even though i can get a further 65 mhz on the old drivers. I think older games will still fly on older drivers, but not new games like max payne 3. Short of a hack , who knows if one will come along seen as the 500 series are not the limelight now , i think upgrade is an option but the 680 has its own limitations for enthusiasts. I'm kinda hoping atis drivers improve and they become a real upgrade option as theres no such limitations on that side of the fence.

Idk bout anyone else but my GTX 550 ti was able to achieve 1025 Core and 2318 Memory, when I would dial in 1020 the core would automatically set it to 1025, but the memory would dial exact, I was using the latest precision an the 296.10 driver, an anything above that driver would cause random pink screens even at stock clocks. But it was solid with those clocks running OC Scanner an BF3 all night long. I did however have the same issue with the core clock not going aboe 999 for awhile but with driver sweeper, an all I was able to reinstall the nvidia driver an then precision an it was back to normal allowing me achieve my norm overclock.

Okay I didn't do an exact experiment but I did notice I was running into the same situation as you guys on my GTX 580 Classified Ultra. I bought the card in January, tested it on Air in Feburary, then boxed it up until I finished my build a few weeks ago. I was exicited to use it on water and seeing how much further I could push it. I was disappointed when nothing was reporting anything higher than 1GHz. Looked around and didn't see anything about it except this thread. Well I decided to run driversweep, go back to the last driver before the GTX 680s came out and gave those a try. Got the card up to around 1.1GHz stable on a short run of OC Scanner. Cleaned the drivers, and installed the latest again. Put the overclock back in and realized the FPS scores and temps were roughly the same as when the card was overclocked on the older drivers even though it wasn't reporting the right OC. So I'm not entirely sure it's acutally limiting, but rather a reporting error. I did have E-Leet installed by the time I ran the tests on the newest drivers again and it was reporting the right Core Clock.

Thanks to SparkyShaft's settings, this 550 ti SC can go past 1K Mhz now stable at the 1025/2318(1159). Had to uninstall the latest 301.42 drivers and download and clean install the Nvidia 296.10 drivers and now I can go past 1K Mhz. Currently letting OC Scanner X fly without hanging so far. Had the Tdr problems and disabled it thinking the timeout won't bother me at 1040 but then again I was watching flash and doing the normal tasks on my worksation so the PC just hung. I guess I would play around those speeds when benchmarking later on and for stability sakes. The downside using the older drivers is I noticed I had 1165 mV using 301 but using 296 its down to 1150. Confirmed enough, the 301.42 drivers won't let you go pass 1000 mhz for reasons we don't know what.

Due to Precision X not working with some of my games, i switched to afterburner. I have 1 SC (2gb gtx 550ti) card and another GTX 550ti 2gb card (not sc or oc). I do want to say that on the sc card, i was only able to reach 999mhz with stock voltage along with not using SLI. Now that i am using SLI, for some reason i can go above 1000mhz core clock along with that i did upgrade my voltage to 1100. My current settings are at 1100 core voltage, 1050mhz core clock, and 2052 memory clock. This is configured for both cards. i get around 40 fps on ultra in bf3

I'am thinking in buying this card even all the stories that were told here and the 1k limit with the new nvidia drivers, I'am thinking to buy the EVGA GeForce GTX550 Ti FPB 1GB, and I don't think that I'am going to overclock it anyways cuz its already overclocked to 951 MHz but I'am wondering how much overclocking can I get with the stock voltage/cooling and with an 460W PSU. And can anyone explain me whats the difference between the EVGA GeForce GTX550 Ti FPB 1GB and the EVGA GeForce GTX550 Ti SuperClocked 1GB besides the clock speed being 981Mhz on the SC, so like I can buy the FPB and overclock it to 981MHz instead of paying an extra 25€ for the SC version?

Mainly the difference is with the 550 Superclocked you're guaranteed it will run stable at 981mhz. While with the 550 FPB, you may very well be able to overclock to 981mhz but it's not guaranteed. Other than that, they are essentially identical cards.

From what ive seen the 550Ti FPB can hit about 1000mhz, most people have no problem hitting that or even a bit over on the older drivers.

I would probably go with the 1 gb model unless your gaming over 1080p resolution, but at over 1080 this card starts to struggle a bit anyways so IMO the 2 gb is kinda pointless on this card.

Just updated drivers to 306.2 beta. This driver can let me go past 1000 mhz on my 550 ti SC but gpu-z reports that I still run at 999.8 compared to 301.42 that just simply downclocks to 50Mhz as soon as I go past 1000 mhz even when stress testing or running ocscannerx. currently stable at 1055 mhz. small, but it has got me some nice numbers on hwbot paired with an i3 2120.

It is not the cards fault, it is EVGA Precision X's fault, after upgrading above 3.03 It limits my card to 999mhz aswell, i was getting a stable 1150 before the upgrade.

Got the same thing since I upgraded my drivers last time (306.97 now, 296.xx before). Was running 1040/2400 before without any problems. Think I got it to test on higher but set a little lower for stability etc. Same thing was with Precision X 3.0.3. So it was the drivers and not the program. Also didn't get any difference in performance when I put clocks over 1000mhz. So now I'm running 999/2400 at 1.1V. GTX 560 ti SC. Good card but kinda disappointing since its water-cooled and could do so much more.

When it comes to the EVGA Branded Nvidia card or even the Nvidia version none of that matters because the problem is within the 300 series drivers....The last driver that you can acheive more than 1000mhz on the core with is gonna be 296.10. It is not the OC scanner or Afterburner that is causing this issue. The way around this problem is to find out what has changed within the driver itself and then well jus go around it somehow.....software hack either at driver level or running in memory as you overclock to surpass this 1ghz limit.

I originally posted in this thread: http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=1824721 not realizing that these forums had a larger existing thread. Too add to what I said there for over here, I have tried changing clocks with both afterburner and precision 3.0.1, and neither could break the 999.8MHz limit. 3.0.1 worked fine prior to installing a 300 series driver.

The final verdict is that these cards will indeed OC to more than 999 or at least I know mine will.

With an OC of 1000,precision X says 999,furmark gave a score of 3010.Bumping the OC to 1025 gives a score of 3020 and OC to 1050 yields a score of 3030.This proves beyond all doubt what so ever that my 2Gb GTX 550Ti is NOT capped at 999.Just what the limit is I have no idea but obviously 999 is not it.

scouty MarioAndretti did u test with the latest drivers ? I got no more points with oc above 1000... Well scouty, since then i have updated to the latest drivers and i wish i had not.I read on another forum that the new driver package also updates the bios. Before the test the latest driver i had installed was 307.?? and had rolled back to 306.97.After updating to the latest drivers I too am seeing no improvements over 1000. Does anyone know where to find the original factory bios for this card?I'm now dieing to find out if the bios on my card really has been changed which may be the cause of the performance cap we have been experiencing.

Yes scouty, you are right. After testing I find that it is capped via drivers.I went back to 296.10 and can once again go as high as 1035.I am also getting a better score in furmark with these old drivers.

Hello there, guys! Just read ALL your posts and it worried me that the Core Clock was being capped at 981 MHz. Particularly, if the new 3xx series drivers are installed. Anyway, after installing Precision X and attempting to overclock to 1000 MHz +, I discovered I could overclock EASILY...!!! I've been flying in FS9 at 1042 MHz. With no problem at all. I even tried to move the slider - just for a moment - to 1183 MHz, and it moved without a squeak... However, when I went to check my Nvidia Drivers, you will all laugh that I am still using the Geforce 280.26 Driver.... Apparently, this OLD driver poses NO problem to overclocking. So you are correct in stating that it is the NEW drivers that are throttling the CPU. By the way, even at 1042 MHz (Core clock), and Fan speed of 60%, the GPU temperature was around 33 Celsius. If you think I'm kidding, I can send screenshots to anybody here. I'm not sure how to attach screenshots in these posts yet.
