Walt Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger has revealed that hackers claimed to have access to an unnamed upcoming movie and have demanded ransom, the Hollywood Reporter said on Monday.

Iger made the comments during a town hall meeting with ABC employees in New York City, the Hollywood Reporter said citing multiple sources.

Massive cyber-attack hits nearly 100 countries

The hackers have demanded that a huge sum be paid on Bitcoin, but Disney has refused to pay, the publication added.

Although Disney has not revealed which upcoming movie hackers are holding for ransom, Deadline reports it is the fifth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise scheduled for release on May 26.

Hacker are now threatening to release bits of the film in increments if their demands aren’t met.

I bet Disney uses the hack to justify it doing less then expected in theaters. The problem is it's supposed to be family friendly entertainment but it needs to exist in a world of super hero films. I don't think it will bomb at theaters but I think the series is in it's twilight. When you consider a $320 million dollar budget which is bigger then Rogue One budget you have to admit Disney is putting a lot of faith in a series that was seeing diminishing returns.

Those that are trying to ransom the movie miss the point. People tend to want to watch first run movies in a theater, not in front of a 24" computer screen. If it's a good movie, then people will see it in the theater even if it's freely downloadable on the internet. Inversely, if it's the standard Hollywood crap, that's on Disney, not those ransoming the movie.

I agree - bitcoin's primary usage is to facilitate illegal activities like this - and allows manipulation for the few to get extremely rich off the backs of everyone else.

Ahh yes, the Mel Gibson 'Ransom' movie plot - that was awesome.

The whole world now knows... my son, Sean Mullen, was kidnapped, for ransom, three days ago. This is a recent photograph of him. Sean, if you're watching, we love you. And this... well, this is what waits for the man that took him. This is your ransom. Two million dollars in unmarked bills, just like you wanted. But this is as close as you'll ever get to it. You'll never see one dollar of this money, because no ransom will ever be paid for my son. Not one dime, not one penny. Instead, I'm offering this money as a reward on your head. Dead or alive, it doesn't matter. So congratulations, you've just become a two million dollar lottery ticket... except the odds are much, much better. Do you know anyone that wouldn't turn you in for two million dollars? I don't think you do. I doubt it. So wherever you go and whatever you do, this money will be tracking you down for all time. And to ensure that it does, to keep interest alive, I'm running a full-page ad in every major newspaper every Sunday... for as long as it takes. But... and this is your last chance... you return my son, alive, uninjured, I'll withdraw the bounty. With any luck you can simply disappear. Understand... you will never see this money. Not one dollar. So you still have a chance to do the right thing. If you don't, well, then, God be with you, because nobody else on this Earth will be.

Paying would be the dumbest thing ever because people like this are always true to their word, +1 on the Gibson ransom.

Just saw the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and can safely say they will blame the hack. Really bad when reviews from the AP go "you'll wish Disney would just declare the franchise dead and tell no more tales."
