We already saw an impact on the HDD market from 1 single "proof of storage" crypto coin called Chia earlier this year:

As more and more of these PoS coins release, do you foresee a similar situation with hdd's that we're going through with gpu's now? Man, I'm really starting to detest these crypto miners. I just wanna play some video games!

Don't think a shortage will happen though.

Supposedly the ultra high capacity HDDs are already getting harder to find. Think 16TB hard drives. If you're just looking for a 1 TB SSD or something, you're probably fine as the miners aren't going to be interested in these "small" capacity drives.

Good to hear. At least us gamers won't be effected by this in that case.

Yeah it's the people needing drives for servers or something that may get hit by it

I doubt it. I don't think there is a drought of resources needed to make an HDD like there is GPU, RAM, and CPUs.

I dont think there will be a shortage in HDD.  I mean if that coin gains traction via social media and celebrities anything is possible.

Highly doubtful a shortage will happen from Chia, especially since its not going to be around long anyway. Besides that, it kills drive in about 40 days so its just not worth the hassle and money at this point.

PS5 NVMe demand (whenever Sony activate their PS5 external storage bay) plus crypto demand could see prices go crazy I bet.

There is already a high capacity hdd/ssd shortage starting to happen overseas and it won't be long before it affects the US.  Chia isn't the only altcoin that uses proof of space.

Yeah, prices have been going up on the relevant HDDs for a while now - you won't notice it likely though, most people use SSDs for gaming these days. Not a lot of call for 10GB+ drives that are good for this kind of thing. Still, some have more than doubled in price already.

Probably nothing to worry about, you should be on NVMe anyways.
