just got this card and the fan hasn't moved at all. card just heats up without the fan kicking in until it's about to overheat (as evidenced by the screen crapping up). should I just take this back to the store? can I get a bios that doesn't have this zero rpm fan mode?

Use EVGA Precision X control & set fan speed curve. See if that works.

nope. done that. it's like this card's fans aren't getting any power or something.

Hmmmm...So even with EPX fan speed set & nothing!? Have you check if the fans are connected properly on the GPU?

nah. this thing came out the box an hour ago (maybe) so I'd hope it's connected fine. either way, if I can't get it sorted in 30 minutes or so I'm just taking it back and getting the msi model.

What's the temp of the card?  Has to reach 60 cels to start spinning up the fans.

    Hi GunnmFTW,

Can you please confirm that the fans do spin when you first turn the computer on? If they do then I would recommend uninstalling any programs that can control the fan and then do a clean install of the Nvidia drivers and see if this helps on a reboot. The card will usually turn the fans on around 78 C.

If your fans never spin, even when the card first receives power, then it is likely something is not working properly and we can of course help with warranty on the product or you can see about exchanging it with the store if preferred.

Please let me know if I can be of any assistance. chrisb@evga.com

just shut down the pc and powered back on (i had restarted a few times before) and these fans don't spin ever. I can see the fan cable is connected. gonna re-insert my psu power cables and if that doesn't work I'll return to the store.

    Dear GunnmFTW,

I can confirm that the fans should spin up upon first boot. Can you please try switching the BIOS switch on the back of the card on number 1 to the on position and see if this changes the behavior? I recommend making sure that the computer is powered down when switching this small switch.

    Dear GunnmFTW,

I am sorry to hear of the issue as this behavior is abnormal. If you can please email me the registered serial number and I can work with you to exchange the product or if you do prefer to exchange it with the store and they are able to work with you then this might be the best option. chrisb@evga.com

Gunn, pull you card out and just take a glance before you return in. Usually you can see the fan connector from the outside of the card. If it is disconnected, even just a tiny bit, you may be able to plug it in and save some time.

Either way, I wouldn't fault you for taking it back at all. Hopefully you get it working pretty quick.

the fan is connected. I took the card out for a while and let it cool down since it was cooking and very hot to the touch. the fan actually worked for two whole minutes and I played GW2 with 140fps and a temp od 55c. then I close the game and we're back to square one. no more fans, several restarts and no more fans when playing any games. frustrating.

Hmm not sure it's a hardware issue.  What are some of your specs?  I suggest reinstalling the os.

The card is properly installed and both 6 pin connectors are attached to GPU?
If so, try unplugging something like your dvd rom to get more power and see if it spins.

that's a really strange behavior, your last post with the fan working changed my mind that the card could be faulty.
now it sounds like a configuration or driver issue.
Chris is right, no matter what the fans should spin shortly during boot and then stop again.

which nVidia driver version do you use? which PrecisionX do you use?

If it were my card I would try flashing the vBIOS with the latest version that I could get directly from EVGA. I would also try re-flashing with the firmware located here.

thanks for the replies. my specs:

    i7 4770K
    Gigabyte Z87X UD4H
    8GB DDR3 2400mhz
    128GB Samsung 830 SSD
    3TB Toshiba HDD
    Corsair HX750 psu
    Phanteks Enthoo Luxe full tower

I build a few systems a week for people. about two weeks ago and a month before that I tested the gigabyte G1 970 and the MSI gaming in my computer. not a single issue with either. I have now the latest drivers from nvidia and the latest version of precX (now uninstalled). I've reconnected the power cables, even tried without my sleeved extensions and nothing. if I shut down and move the bios switch it works maybe 1/5 times but only for a minute or two. my brother plucked the card with his finger and the fans spun for a few seconds. this looks hardware related. in an hour this card is going back to the store. don't think I'll be getting the same model for a replacement. thanks again everyone.

edit: just reflashed and reinstalled drivers. the fans still won't spin.

just tested the msi gaming I got and even though that too has a zero rpm fan mode, the fan turn on at boot and when temps reach 60c. sucks that i couldn't get the ftw to work properly. can close this topic now.

Not sure it will work but theres a way to modify the BIOS so the fanspeed never goes below a certain rpm value. id set it at 250rpm at idle instead of 0rpm.

    1. extract bios from card with gpu-z
    2. open org bios with Maxwell Bios Tweaker and edit fan value from 0 to an higher value.
    3. save the moded bios and flash gpu with nvflash in cmd window run as admin

Imortant! Remember to disable the card in Device manager before flashing,  After flashing enable it again and reboot. important!

It will take you 5min to do this...

If this doesnt work it might be the fan itself.

Damn guys, I have been working on this issue for the past 3 weeks.

I have two geforce GTX 980's (hydro copper) from newegg that I bought and I have tested both to see what the problems could be. I've gone through literally 30 scenarios relating to compatibility (replaced my x79 and 4930k with a x99 5930k and still no luck.

I just came to the conclusion that it had to be a bad batch of cards..... I could not have gotten two bad cards from two different batches.  that's just almost impossible.

Neither of my cards fans are spinning and I get the auto shutdown at 95+ temp.

This is sooo freakin frustrating and I've spent way to much money on these cards to have this problem.

**I'm going to try the bios flashing and changing the RPM and Will update you on if it works but I hope to god it does.

Opps yep, correct. sorry, I got caught up in the excitement that I may be able to fix it with setting the RPM's. It's been a long 3 weeks.

Sooooo, if I cannot set the fans to cool it down, what the hell do I do to fix it?  It's not cooling!!! at all!

ok, so...... I was under the impression that this card was water cooled internally and not that it needed a separate water cooling block. DAAMANNFNGNGAWESFOASJGF.

    Phillipemmons,
I would suggest you start another thread so this one doesn't get confusing for the OP and yourself. In your thread put in your systems specs and such and go from there. When 2 peoples concerns are in the same thread one persons issues can get overlooked even though they might end with the same remedy.

Hydrocopper series cards have a built in water block, but they are *not* self-cooling! You need to connect the waterblock on the Hydrocopper card to a water cooling loop. A water cooling loop consists of a liquid coolant, tubing to move the coolant, a pump, a reservoir, and a radiator. All of these things are *not* contained on the hydrocopper card; you *must* supply a source of liquid coolant to the card from an external source. If you don't have experience with water cooling and lack the knowledge to build your own, you will definitely want to return the hydrocopper card for an air cooled card.
