so i got my backplate, and took some snazzy photos. here are some tips:
1. watch out how tight the torx head screws are! i ruined 2 t6 head bits and had to notch several with a rotary tool just to get them out!  (check two comments down, good tip on this note)
2. check which screws you actually have to take out, there are 3 or 4 that you need to leave in.
3. when you take out the screws holding in the two actual heatsinks, its a good idea to put something between the plexi window and the heatsink, like a paper towel, both to keep it from hitting the window, and to make it easier to screw it back in (as otherwise the screws dont quite reach)

and now for photos!
here is a bare 690:

and here is the backplate installed:
I personally love the cutout EVGA logo and the slanted dot pattern.

and lastly, from the angle most people will see it, installed with the logo showing.

I ended up paying for rush shipping but $40 for protection and the much cleaner look, i think, is worth it.

and now this card is off to nateman doo, hoping a green and copper waterblock is in the future!

Did you have to take the heatsink and fan off to install the backplate?

Nice backplate ! It certainly makes the card look that much better. Just thought I'd chime in here with a tip of my own concerning the above quote.

The best way to remove the screws is to do a run of 3DMark or some other intensive video task that will heat the card up for a few minutes. Then immediately remove the card and take out the screws while the card is still hot. They will come right out. Like butter! No more ruined screws.

not if you dont want to, you do have to remove all 8 screws holding in the 2 heatsinks, but you can leave the rear bracket and the 3-4 screws in place, which will keep the shroud on.
and good tip willdear! i hadnt thought of that.

Why did you take off the heatsink if you didn't have to? Did you put on a waterblock?

Just seems like alot of work to install a backplate like you did.

lol its getting sent to nateman to get a waterblock installed, and i wanted to get a picture of the memory/GPU arrangement out there for the heck of it. boredom caused me to do it mostly.

Backplates are cool I've purchased two for my GTX 580 SC & two for my GTX 580 Classys; other than the looks, they did nothing to improve my temps; cosmetically, it's nice, but in the end you have the "Bugatti" of gpus and you dont need 'em. EVGA should had provided them for free as much as we paid for them

    very nice.

Apparently I have to wait till next week before I get mine...slowest UPS shipping from CA to NC is apparently a week long issue.

Lol glad it worked out for you. Shortly after installing my backplate, my 690 gave out. I can't think of any reasons for it to die except it's too convenient for it to die right after installing the backplate. Maybe the plate shorted out something on the back?

    Syan,

How has your 690 HC been so far? Temps and everything?

    Syan,

How has your 690 HC been so far? Temps and everything?

Up until the moment it died? I get around low to mid 40's on the cores. That's with an ambient temperature of ~80F. No matter what I do, this room is always hot because of this computer. As for experience with the hydrocopper? Miserable. I've gone through, including this one, 3 hydrocoppers, and 2 690's. I'd personally suggest going with EK or even XSPC for the 690 waterblock. If you're like me and want the red glowing EVGA symbol? Good luck with your HC. Remember don't tighten the screws at all or the screw holes pop out of the block and you end up with bad waterblock contact.
