Wonder what EVGA's will look like. I can't wait to see some legitimate benchmarks.

40A per rail though.... so what would happen if I wanted 2 or 3 of them.

Minimum PSU requirements are about combined 12V right?

So even if you have 2 rails with 40A each, that is still 80A on the 12V section of your PSU that your system can utilize.

Also, it's not like every GTX480 will use 40A.  That's just the minimum for an entire system plus the card.   So two of these cards in SLI would be slightly higher...maybe,  45-50A minimum.

You should be good to run 2 cards, probably not three though. It seems as thoug, based on that article, the GTX480 will draw about 20+ amps at max load so you are definetely good for 2 GTX480's with your PSU. Three and you might kill your PSU, but it may still run for a while I would presume.

That rating is for total system power on the 12V rail, I'm sure the (***) would state as much.  For SLI you'll have to wait for minimum SLI specs or individual rated TDP for that card.  You can use previous cards as a guideline though, given it has to come under 300W according to PCI-SIG specs.  The GTX 295 was rated for 289W if that helps you any, and required 46A for total system power on the 12V rail.  Assuming they're using a similar system testbed, that would be ~4A less required for the GTX 480, or 48W difference....so maybe 250W for the GTX 480.

you would have to share the second card with the cpu.

I have the corsair and while it ran 2 295's and my 920... I had to put the second 295 on the cpu rail otherwise it would just shutoff when the cards were being used heavy in gaming and my i7 OC.

When I switched the second card to the cpu rail it worked at stock, but when I OC the cpu to 4.4 and the cards over 740 it shut off lol

I think anyone using one 480 will be fine on the corsair, 2, i don't think so.

I would say a minimum would be best set at 55-60 amps. These are pretty beefy cards and I could not imagine they would run on 50 amps none the less 45 amps.

looks like ill be getting a second psu, im sure that a 1000w psu will do fine for gaming with 3 but if you want to oc then you may be out of luck with a 1000w psu

Does anyone know if eVGA has a booth at cebit this year?  I'd love to see evga's 480's as well as their unnamed 5520 chipset motherboard.

The PC Power & Cooling 610w Silencer could power this card as it has a 8 pin and 6 pin and it's amps are right in line with what is needed for the 480GTX.. So that kind of looks like the min supply for the card but i don't think they make it anymore as i remember getting mine from newegg for $79 shipped which was a deal and i wish i had bought 2 of them now...

iGame...  It sounds like an Apple slogan.

Otherwise, nothing too noteworthy.  Well, other than the fact that i have to point out that it wouldn't make much sense for a company to ship out empty boxes, so Fermi must really be coming!  It isn't just a figment of our imagination!

Re:GTX 480 Retail box pictured with PSU requrements! 2010/03/01 12:43:34 (permalink)
If I wanted to purchase three GTX 480s, I'm pretty sure I would be good with this SilverStone Strider ST1500 1500W beast that I reviewed back in summer.

Then again, I'm going to be skipping this initial Fermi generation entirely due to the severe amount of transistor leakage and power walls that are plaguing these first-generation 40nm chips. It's a bummer that Q4 2010 can't come any sooner.

Nevertheless, great find OP and thanks for the info! Much appreciated.
