Hi Guys, currently running GTX 295 on "see my signature" system. 3DMark06 around 24,000 now DX9. Thinking of upgrading to single GTX 680 (stock) or GTX 670 (2GB FTW). Budget limited. I may SLI later, but not on the radar yet. My current GTX 295 performance seems equivalent to GTX 460SLI Anyone done very similar upgrade and can give me approx benches or examples? Any idea on likely performance increase? In simple terms I am looking for maybe 30% more video grunt and obviously DX11 vs my current DX9 and I will change OS to Win7. Would be happy with GTX 670 as long as improvement is in the order of 30% Please keep it simple, I used to be hardcore O'Clocker but I am out of date now. I play my games at 1920x1200, usually with 16xAA and 8xAnis Thanks in advance

1920x1280, that's an unusual screen resolution. Playing on a 1920x1080 screen > upgrading to a 2560x1600/1440 by the end of the year. You're in the same boat as I was in. Went from a EVGA GTX 260 216core > to a EVGA Signature GTX 690. I too was running Windows XP Pro but the difference was that my system specs was a Asus X38 Max Formula with a Intel E3110 CPU and 2GB of ram At 1920x1080 nothing is holding my new system down. Playing everything I own at max settings and just rolling on fine with no issues. I know Diablo 3 isn't GPU heavy but my 260/E3110 would chug for the 1st three mins of starting the game up always (everything turned up). Now I have no issues at all with everything turned on. Another game I play all the time is Mass EFfect 3 but that never gave any issues to my 260 and nothing to my 690. BF3 was a game that I could run but not at something I would consider acceptable to me, now I can play also with everything turned up with no issue. However looking back if it was price per I was looking at everything I would've been just fine with a single GTX680 (Classified flavor mind you) or even the Asus DCU II GTX670. I don't know how to give you the answer you want but I spent one month looking at every website from tomshardware, techpowerup, guru3d, anandtech, hardocp, overclock3d and came to the conclusion of which GPU that I wanted. With the fact that we no longer have good mid range priced card anymore (IE the GTX 260 hit the sweet spot when it came out for price per performance) I was looking at the minimum price of USD $400 . And with that knowledge of all the reviews and that I would be upgraded this year and now, I went for the card I have now. I'm happy with my purchase and do not regret it one bit. So as far as performance goes any of the cards on the market will do you fine. So if I had to do it all over again the EVGA GTX680 Classy, Sapphire Vapor-X 7970, and the Asus DCUII GTX 670 sits at the top for purchase. Asus GTX670 DCUII because its slient as hell http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pmv8sigAd-w&feature=player_embedded

I made the exact same upgrade very recently: i.e. I went from a Palit GTX 295 to an EVGA 670FTW I play on a 23 inch monitor @ 1920 X 1080 resolution The GTX295 was a beast – remember it’s effectively 2x200 series cards bolted together, and 2x 896MB Video RAM. My 670FTW runs with a boost clock of 1150 and sometimes a tad higher if the room is cool. It’s a single card with 2GB of Video RAM While benchmarks are nice I think a more practical method to measure the value you’re getting is to take what you see with your eyes in game. So here is my anecdotal evidence of the differences using some of my fav games. I’m not really in to battlefield or call of duty, sorry if that’s your thing. Let’s take a game like GTA4: You’re limited to only using 896MB’s of the Video RAM versus the 2GB of the EVGA 670 FTW so this means with the 670 I was able to crank up “draw distance” to maximum which meant there was less scenery pop-in as you’re driving along which made for a much more immersive experience. What about Max Payne 3: I played all the way through this using the GTX295 and it was a beautiful experience, frames per second were constantly in the mid 50’s. Playing through it for the second time on a higher difficulty using the 670 was also a beautiful experience, the frames per second were a solid 60 (as I used vsync) however if I hadn’t measured it, I wouldn’t have noticed the difference as both cards were smooth. What I did gain was the DX11 effects – much more little details which make for a more immersive gaming experience. Civilization 5: I’ve played many many full length games with the 295 and it has served me pretty well – I did have problems with black blocks appearing on the scenery until I zoomed closer and the textures would finally fill in showing what it should look like. Let’s be honest the game isn’t one that requires huge FPS so this was annoying but not a game breaker, IMHO CIV 5 is such a great game that it was a minor annoyance. When I played using the 670 I was blown away, I could zoom in and out much quicker, more little details (DX11), no annoying black blocks while the textures were taking their sweet time to appear – this was a major improvement. The Witcher 2: A game known to break many a supposedly powerful video card. My first play through on the 295 was at first plagued by choppy performance but eventually I was able to find the right balance of in-game settings and it was playable with a few minor adjustments from the game’s medium settings. The “uber-sampling” mode ran at 20-23 FPS. Upgrading to 670 and starting another play through (because The Witcher 2 was updated with more content) I was a tad disappointed that the Uber Sampling mode of a game older than my 670 was still crippling it to a mere 35 FPS however I was able to crank up every other setting to max and had minimal choppy-ness and 55-60 using adaptive V sync. This game is truly beautiful and isn’t even DX11 !! Shogun 2 Noticeable performance increase moving from the 295 to the 670 + DX11 effects. In the really massive multiplayer battles with big unit sizes I certainly noticed how smooth the 670 was in comparison. Orcs Must Die! (1 and 2): Absolutely zero noticeable difference (It’s an older game engine and both cards handle it well enough that I don’t notice the difference) Left for Dead 2: Absolutely zero difference (same reason as Orcs Must Die!) In conclusion you are certainly getting 30% more value out of some games with the 670, however if you’re playing some older titles, you won’t notice a thing (except in benchmarks).

Frames per second were always above 60 on both setups, top end much higher for GTX680. Gameplay much smoother on GTX680. Check thread for settings.

I went from 275 FTW SLI to a single 670 FTW 2gb. I felt the upgrade was well worth the money. Better performance, way more VRAM, much cooler, much more efficient. It's not an upgrade that you will regret. I planned on going SLI but I'm so pleased with the performance of just 1 card that I think I'll stick it out till next gen.

There are some recent benches put out for the 660TI. Its supposedly only $299 and only a tad slower than the 670. Something for you to google and check out =)

mcarey6 If you're going with a 670 go for the 670 FTW. Hands down the best value vs price right now. I second this recommendation

Yes, thanks. I am in Australia, but the FTW is still good value here. e.g. only $10 dearer than the slower GTX 670 Overclocked 2GB which is a nice thin solution but the FTW looks the goods to me. Our dollar is stronger than USD right now, I may even import one from USA. cheers

I went from a EVGA GTX-295 to a GTX-680 SC Signature. My 295 still runs perfectly but I wanted to max out everything on BF3. The 295 ran it on Auto with some settings on low - med and it ran pretty hot but it ran it. The 680 runs cool, and everything is maxed and looks beautiful. All other games, the FPS is off the charts. You will be happy with the upgrade from a 295 to a 670 FTW or a 680. Cheers!

Cheers Grog. Heat has become a real problem on my 295. I have to strip and clean it every couple of months. I am in dusty small town. I may even go for an overclocked 660 TI as suggested by crezno. This looks the goods to me. Released here today. Pretty much 670 less 5% which will be fine at my 1920x1200 res. Overclocked seems faster than the 670. http://www.guru3d.com/art...i-windforce-oc-review/ (Base clock 1032 MHz, boost 1111, memory 6008) A$400 here with a couple of Nexus 210 case fans included and I can use them. A quality 670 like the FTW is A$480 cheers & thanks again.

I went from a evga 295 which was rma to a 480, I just got a openbox asus top which was under 400 shipped that does 1255mhz out of the box and cranks to 1295 mhz stable virtually silent.
I mean cmon 1255 mhz out of the box, my first top which i returned did 1280mhz out of the box stable
I still might return it amd wait for the next series as my 480 still handles my 1440p resolution

Cheers Donta, You are right but GTX 670 is fine for me. One of my dogs is having surgery on Tuesday. He runs on full overclock all the time, so the $100 difference here is a consideration and I don't play hardcore shooters any more. Gigabyte GTX 670 OC at factory settings will murder the stuff I play.
