I bought used GTX 1080 Ti, and now that I'm using it, I noticed it doesn't have the best thermals.
I'm testing in a room with 23°C, open case, one 120mm fan directly blowing on top of the card.
When playing overwatch at 1440p 75fps epic settings, my GPU usage goes to 60-70%, temperature is about 78°C on the core. I consider everything under 82°C to be fine, but the problem is once I start playing Black Desert Online, where GPU usage goes to 100%. In that scenario, I get up to 85°C and card start to throttle down on core speed.
When playing overwatch, fans goes to 80% speed, and when I'm playing BDO at 100% load, it goes to 100% fan speed on GPU and yet still thermal problems.

Is this card supposed to run that hot at stock settings? No core/memory speed or voltage changes.
I also cleaned GPU of dust before using it, since I'm almost sure that it was used for mining.

Any suggestions?

Oh well it seems like there is something really wrong with my card then. 70°C is what it should be, but mine gets to 85°C and would go even higher if it wasn't thermal throttling.
Do SC2 cards have some warranty labels on them? I didn't see any on my card, and just wondering if previous user maybe opened this car and messed something up.

Yep, there should be a serial number sticker on the card.

Well I just took my GPU out of the system to check that. There are two stickers on the backplate. One if with serial number, where it also says that warranty will be void if removed.
And the other sticker is a bit lower on the card, next to PCI-e slot, and it covering both parts of backplate, so if someone would remove it, that stick would be ripped.
Both sticker are untouched, and not even slightly damaged, so I'm pretty sure this card wan't opened by anyone.

Would abnormal high temperatures on GPU be valid reason for RMA? Card does have 500 days of warranty left, but not sure how it's with warranty and second hands purchases like from craigslist etc.

Pascal can handle up to 95C before the thermal throttle kicks in

High temps would probably be acceptable for rma if changing the thermal paste doesn't help resolve the issue.

it starts to pull the base clock down quite alot after about 84 with how boost clocks work. it might not be true thermal thorttling but it does in a sense pull the clocks down because of thermals. its not 100% thermal throttling but it is clock throttling because of temps. with utilities like xoc or after burner you can move the temp target to 91c but his card still seems to be getting alot warmer then it should for the kinda fan speeds he says its hitting

But if I want to change thermal paste, I need tot take card apart. By doing that, one of the stickers on card will get damaged and I think that would void warranty.

Yeah even at 100% fan speed, card will still slow itself down and temps would reach 85°C. With my old GTX 1070 FE with only one fan, card would stay under 70°C when OCed and fan up to 80%. Sure GTX 1080 Ti uses more power and generate more heat, but it should have better cooling overall with 2 fans at 100% speed ... something is really wrong here. Might be just TIM inside of it getting bad after 1,5 years of usage.

Breaking the sticker that has evga written all over it won't void the cards warranty.

I have just replaced Thermal paste on my GPU with Noctua NT-H1 that I have left from when I bought CPU.
Temps are now around 80°C when case is opened and it can handle around 1900MHz on core.
That's with 75-80% fan speed on GPU.

I will consider that as improvement, but still not 70°C under load like from most reviewers.
I'm still worried about summer time, because I don't have AC in my room, and during summer my ambient temps are around 30°C, compared to 22°C right now xD
So that might still be a problem, just not for now. I already sent email to EVGA support, asking if that would be considered as valid reason for RMA ... will see what they will say. But could be also problem since GTX 1080 Ti stock is sold out, so not sure what I would get back from RMA.

Also I just found some reviews, showing VRM and memory temps on this card:
    https://www.pcworld.com/article/3191272/components-graphics/evga-gtx-1080-ti-sc2-review-a-ferocious-graphics-card-with-a-radical-cooler.html?page=8

One of them have default fan curve and those VRM temps get up to 64-66°C. Other reviewer had a bit more aggressive fan curve and those temps only reached 50°C.
I don't have screenshot of my temps available right now, because I'm not home, but I remember that during testing I also checked those temps and those were all 80°C or higher. Max was 89°C on some VRM probe. And that's with fans at 80% or higher ...
But I didn't give it much thought, since those should be able to survive 120°C ... but now seeing other reports, my temps are like 25°C higher with open case, and high fan speed. Something seems to be really wrong.

I just posted a similar thread.   Mine reaches 77 degrees at full load.   I don't mind the temp as much as the fan speed.  One fan 70% other goes to 80%, which is louder than I'd like.   I'm going to replace the GPU paste on mine as well.  meanwhile, I have the fans scaled back at the cost of performance.
