Just bought this card used off eBay, all I could afford.

As soon as the card comes under any stress at all, such as a game menu or Furmark or gameplay, I can hear a scratchy whining sound.

The Power supply is an EVGA 500W which has powered a GTX 660 and a 960 with no problems before.

The warranty is up until December 2019, wondering what I should do. Thanks

My first gtx 970 had coil whine. everyone told me to replace the power supply and after going through the fun of buying and installing new power supply noise still existed. Unfortunately. it was the GPU. try running a game that hits really high fps like a Lego game see if noise increases. if it does then cap fps and see if noise stops. I found in the case of gtx 970 i was able to eliminate the noise by locking fps

Since the GPU is used, it is doubtful the usual tricks would accomplish anything. So, since the GPU is under warranty, if the noise is intolerable, RMA it.  I'm lucky and have a extremely quiet GPU and system. It would drive me nuts having a squealing noise.

Well, you never know, he might be running without vsync and as you know, that can cause considerable whine, especially on loading and menu screens.

I generally run without Vsync as I prefer the lack of input lag over some torn frames.

I do have a Freesync monitor so when I upgrade to Win 10 I will likely try out Freesync and hope the input lag isn't bad.

I've started the RMA process but EVGA naturally want me to provide some information. However they are asking for page after page of diagnosis etc.

I didn't have a drop of coil whine on my 960 and as soon as I used the 1070 I can hear the screeching sound when playing any game... In addition the EVGA 1070's are well known for having coil whine issues... It shouldn't take a genius to work out what the problematic component is - I will nevertheless duly carry out their instruction and hope they can do an advance replacement.

    Thanks!

Yep sadly it seems this problem is now nigh unavoidable... For my last GPU upgrade, I have played around with four different cards (Gigabyte RX 580 8GB Aorus, Gigabyte RX 580 Gaming 8G, KFA2 GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5X, EVGA GTX 1060 6GB SC) and they all made inductor buzz / coil whine sounds to some extent (Aorus > Gaming 8G > EVGA > KFA2 from loudest to quietest), tested on two different PSUs.

Our lord and savior buildzoid says this is unavoidable as well. It's unfortunate, never had this problem before, although it must be said I'm quite sensitive to sound and always strive to have a very quiet rig with undervolted / underclocked components with fans running at low RPM, so I might notice it more than someone with a huge case with a billion fans.

I always valued a quiet PC too, as it's on my desk and the rear is perpendicular to me, I have Fractal Design low RPM fans, a Noctua cooler and an EVGA PSU with an EVGA GPU, it's just too loud!

I feel your pain, then. I would RMA and hope for a quieter card.
