Like the title says would you guys like to get involved in a Folding competition in Jan 2024 between TATT and [H]ard OCP They have a challenge every year between the two teams and are thinking of opening it up to more teams to make it more interesting. They like to do it near the end of Jan. so not to interfere with the PG TDP that goes on for the month of February. I would like to do it and fire up a few folding rigs. They have the system in place and I don't think there is a whole lot for us to do but say yes and fire up some boxes. Most of the folders don't have to do anything but keep folding, well maybe fire up another rig and do a few CPU tasks to help. Every little bit helps. So, what say you, any interest?

Well it's being thrown together now, they have been doing it for a few years and thought opening it up may gain more interest. Seems there may be an issue with stats, but as far as I am concerned it doesn't have to be fancy. Pick a day and time to start, not each teams total points and on the end day note the teams total points. Subtract one from the other and get the total points in said time frame and the team with the most points wins. It's for science and a little fun as far as I am concerned. Yeah hourly stats are nice but I am not that picky. I can do math, start with xxxx and have yyyy now, its not that hard. Here is the thread at [H] https://hardforum.com/threads/annual-h-vs-taat-folding-home-bigadv-eol-5th-anniversary-challenge.2032553/I haven't been to TAAts page to look yet. I have been a little busy with people sick for the holidays (Covid) and now I have a dang toothache. But yeah I was asked to see if there's interest, I said I'll ask, but it sounds good to me, so far a few sounds good. I'll give it a day or so and say sure, unless several people chime in and say heck no. The days of the Chimp challenge and other competitions was a lot of fun.

From the [H] thread: OK...so I think we have decided all teams interested can let us know and join in. We will send a few invites out but I honestly don't know how big of an interest it will be so if anyone wants a team to join in, spread the word. We will be doing this Jan. 24th to the 31st. No sign up page or individual sign up necessary but we would like someone from the team to at least come in and say sign us up so that we know to pull your teams stats. That is basically it. pututu correct me if I'm wrong but you said you wanted to start at 12:00 UTC time correct? The answer was yes 12:00 UTC to start. So I will post in their thread yes sign us up.

Thanks for pointing out my mistake. My brain is getting slower and less sharp since I retired in 2022. Gotta keep the brain exercised Anyway, it's all fun and for science, like they always said. It's a 7-day race, once a year. Hopefully not too taxing. Most important try to get as many folders on board for this "short" race. I'm sure at EVGA peak, there are many folders participated same as [H] during the bigadv days. This short video from EOC really summarizes the progression of various teams over the years.

lol no problem, I've made a few mistakes converting the 24hr/UTC time conversion over the years. I was looking at it and thinking it just didn't look right. I sat here for a good 5 minuets hurting my brain thinking it over.

I ran folding on my Ryzen 5700x for the first time and was surprised it was showing +300k ppd. The 3060ti is in there and I’m saddened that the system is pulling 700ish watts. In fact this seems unlikely when the card is rated at 250w max and the system draws about 260w when just the cpu folds. Does anyone have underclocking or undervolting advice?

Yes 30 series cards do consume watts & the warmer they run the more watts. Try dropping the Voltage slider from 100% to 90%-98% instead of changing the power limit. Then if temps are still too warm, you might have to use the power limit around 100% (no OC on power limit) In my testing a small drop in voltage to the GPU can yield a decent drop in GPU temp & not make a huge impact in the performance. The reason is a cooler GPU will Boost to a higher MHz.

Man, it has been a long time since I did any CPU folding. I fired up a WU on a 5950X, default settings except 3600mhz ram profile: ~430k ppd, 145W package power. 5700x has much lower TDP so it seems like something may be off to get 700W? With a 4090 folding also on default settings, PC is pulling under 600W. About the same results as with CPU crunching BOINC and GPU folding. With my 3080ti, I just turn power target down to 70-80% on projects that run hot. That PC has a 3950X and total power draw under 600W as well. 4090 responds really well to 70% power target, can barely even notice any performance loss. 3080ti loses just a bit but power draw comes way down as CoolGTX said. I never did much testing with undervolting using the curve, power target has worked well for me. Using HWinfo to monitor CPU/GPU and total power draw measured from the UPS.

Granted different project# have different level of credit, the 5700x and 5950x can still outperform the old xeon 2p 2670 (~ low 300K PPD) especially in power efficiency, at least according to the very old cpu ppd database maintained by overclock.net here. I'll probably use 70% power limit of my ampere cards.

Thanks guys, currently trying 70% on GPU and CPU(12) and it’s fluctuating between 590 and 610. I know I can save additional watts by dropping the CPU clocks and voltage as well. PPD for these wu’s and settings is 4.5M so not too bad.

Ah 2 of my hero’s heard from. So at this point I think a call to arms for all previous folders is necessary. Only 1 week of the 52 this year sounds like a reasonable request for old time or part time folders. Full time folders do what they do very well. 5 teams in so far as OC.com has made it official. They are winning the trash talking race so far. HereWho’s in? Dust off your old six shooters fire them up. Put on your best monkey avatar if you like. Let’s ride for old times and science.

Start recruiting new and past folders and see if any team can break their team monthly/weekly/daily output record per EOC stat during the race. Here is the count down timer for the race. Less than 10 days to go!!!
