The jokes began to fly just minutes after the news broke that Brandon Davies was dismissed from the BYU basketball team for having premarital sex with his girlfriend.

On the one hand, I dont think that this place should be able to kick him for something done in private. I would be willing to bet there are multiple people high up there that have BIG skeletons in their closets.

But since this is a religous college, and they do preach pretty harsh against that Kudos to them for standing up for what they believe.

I don't really know about you guys, but i'd rather not pay for someone to tell me how I should run my life. It's funny how these places get away with discrimination in a country that does not allow it. So why should we abide by their rules when they can't even abide by the ones they are supposed to follow from the United States of America?

Yeah they're pretty up front about their honor code when you go there.  Alcohol isn't permitted either...and the same goes for the staff.

BYU is a private institution, and he knew the rules before he began attending there.  If he did not hold the same beliefs and did not intend on following the rules, he should have picked a different college.  It's not discrimination, it's their right to exercise their religious freedom, and uphold the values they believe in.

I know that this is of a religious nature, but I had to speak up.  I defer all moderation of this thread to another mod.

You dont have a right to be on a sports team of a private institution. If BYU was a public college, this would be entirely different, but its not.

Apparently the kid grew up not far from the school, so he knew better than anybody that you've got to follow their rules.
I definitely back the institution in this situation.

All right, looking over the honor code again and giving it a second read, I suppose it is not discrimination with their choice of wording... But they do seem more strict towards one group of people than another in one section of that honor code (The 3rd one down).

You have clearly been misinformed. BYU is a private institution who can chose to refuse business to anyone they please. A company can fire someone for having a relationship with a coworker, it works exactly the same way. Or for example, my dads work will not hire family members of employees, but they are still an EOE.

And right now private institutions can discriminate against gender orientation. One notable example would be the Boy Scouts.

While you cant do 1960s style segregation, business are definitely within the law in cases like these.

I applaud BYU for enforcing their code no matter how "strict" it is.  All students and staff know the deal so it's no surprise.

If Davies admitted the code violation--which may be the case since he's apologized to the team--then I applaud him as well for being a stand-up, honest guy.

Silliest post I've read in years.  You obviously don't have a clue what you are talking about.  Your analogy is so far from the reality of the situation it's not even worth commenting on; yet I do so anyway.

In this particular case one CAN knock this guy for having a good time; specifically, BYU as a private institution.  Davies broke the code that he agreed to in order to become a student at BYU.  It appears to me you don't see it as an ethical dilemma simply because of a lack of personal ethics and understanding of such.
