I was just doing a little research and this jumped out at me. Don't run Disk cleanup unless you're 100% certain your system is stable after installing Windows 7 SP1. Unless you want to reinstall the entire OS.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/uninstall-sp1

If you can't uninstall SP1
If you've used Disk Cleanup since installing SP1, the backup files needed to uninstall the service pack might have been deleted from your computer. To remove the service pack, you'll need to reinstall Windows 7. For installation information, see Installing and reinstalling Windows 7.

Darn, wish I would have read this yesterday. I had to do an Upgrade Repair Reinstallation of Windows 7 yesterday to finally get SP1 to install. It appears programs like Driver Cleaner and Driver Sweeper removed more than it should have...see below. Anyway with SP1 installed everything seems to be running great, but I did run the Disk clean up, so it looks like I'm stuck with what is.

That is odd, I installed it on about 6 different Win7 systems, and each time it was ~965MB, but I was using the ISO disc to install them all, wonder if that makes a difference, meh..oh well.

I believe using Windows Update, it detects what you already have and don't need with regards to the service pack and it only installs about 78 MB if you've been keeping up with regular Windows updates.  Using an ISO disc with the full blown package, it might have just installed everything despite you already having most of the package installed with previous Windows updates - and backed up more.  Just a guess.

Your probably right, but the good thing is I have had no problems similar to those reported in the forums... but I always keep up with Widows updates though.

I can't hear my  two systems w/ SSD OS, both use Diskeeper w/ $10 pack to help with SSDs. I do use CCleaner. Did clean install a week prior in preparation.
Size of update, given 20Mbps and how long it took to bring my systems current? seems like it was more than a mere 78MB download which is smaller than an nVidia driver update.
The one system on 10K VR which of course is easy to hear, was cloned and restored but hadn't had a clean install but as current as the others, no Diskeeper if that matters, and has been chugging away and noisy since SP1 (which is to say, very different behavior from prior).
    Just saying.

    Processor: Core i5 3570 @ 3.78GHz OS: Windows 8 HDD: WD 1TB Samsung 840
    Memory: Corsair DDR3 2526GB 1600MHz Graphic: eVGA GTX 460 1GB Monitor: HP ZR24w

I used the 78 MB Windows update method on my main system and didn't have any problems. I use CCleaner and the system has ran great since July 09! I have another 3 systems that need to be done eventually. I'm not in a big hurry because SP1 doesn't do much.

I haven't used Diskeeper in a couple years. The HyperFast SSD Optimizer simulated real world scenario PERFORMANCE BENEFIT numbers look too good to be true. Do you really notice that much of a difference? David Murphy doesn't think so and I'm a little skeptical myself. At least not in Windows 7 or any other OS that supports TRIM. I still haven't jumped on the SSD bandwagon. I'm saving it and Wireless N for a rainy day.

You can run "Disk Cleanup" just don't select the box marked "Service Pack Backup Files"
As with all Service Packs once you remove this you can't go back!

    Motherboard > ASUS P6T Deluxe V2
    CPU > i7-980x B1 Batch#3003A957 @ 4.4

I used the disk cleanup tool from Tuneup Utilities 2011 after I installed SP1 and it deleted 1008 MB worth of Windows update backups. Took about 15-20 minutes to delete everything.
