I'm getting some really bad coil whine with this thing and having second thoughts on it. Should I return it to Best Buy and just wait for the RTX 40XX series of cards?

    A lot of different things cause cool whine, and you have only mentioned the 3090ti. What brand and wattage/part number power supply do you have? What other components have you changed recently? What region do you live in?

    Cool whine can be cause by “dirty” power or an old Power supply.

    Define "bad coil whine." Noise up close only. Sounds like a screeching sound. Variable whine based on fps and load.
     
    I had a FTW3 3090ti for about a week before returning it but coil whine was very low. You had to get right up on it to hear it and basically under load those fans drowned it out easily. Nothing could match the coil whine of the Founder's editions I tried out over the last few years.
     
    You could exchange it for another one and see if it is much better but each card is a crap shoot to a degree.

    I *thought* my refurb 6800XT that I got back from Asus had coil whine because the whine occured for the first time after installing it.

    It turned out the noise was coming from my PSU though. The same PSU was quiet with the original GPU, but the refurb must pull more power or stress the PSU differently.

    It took three PSU's to get rid of the whine too:

    750w EVGA GA = whine.
    850W Super Flower (Bronze something) = Whine.
    850W Super Flower (Gold something out of my wife's PC) = Success!

    Try laying your PC on Its side and getting your ear close to the PSU intake fan while running a stress test/benchmark.
