Don't ship UPS. I rma'd my 3080 ftw3 and went to ship in the same box it came in. Went to the ups store and was told they'd have to repack it. Cost $35.00. I asked why, it's the same box I received it in via ups from Evga. Reply was it has to have a minimum of 4" of packing on each side. That's not the way it was shipped to me via ups. What? Shipping was ground 5-7 business days plus a grand insurance for $69.00. Lets total this up: $35.00 packing+$69.00 shipping + tax = $111.28 (5-7 days shipping time)
USPS Priority mail 2 day delivery + $1000. insurance signature required with tracking...$47.63 from FL to Ca. Sent Mon. arrived Wed.
Just my experience.

That is strange. I have never had ups tell me I need to repack anything I've ever shipped. I walk in with the label printed and on the box and they weigh it and scan it and ask if I want a receipt.

I don't understand why UPS would worry about how you ship an item that they don't know what's inside of it? Their job is to ship boxes not worry about your RMA. The 2" packing on each side or whatever the rule is, already exists how within the OEM box on how EVGA packed it. You don't need to add anything else unless you want to yourself.

Try to Cross-ship next time. Evga will provide you a prepaid label. You'll just have to pay collateral, but you'll get the refund once they receive it (they said 1-3 business days, but I've received the confirmation my refund the day they received it.)

I don't kmow. I've shipped alot of stuff from there before. Never had a problem. I never saw this girl before, maybe she was new. Problem is the owner, which I've delt with before was standing right there.
Funny how you can be a customer for years and it's all good but the one time it goes south, that's the one that stands out.
Btw, it was sealed with a printed lable.
Anyway, I saved more that half the cost for half the shipping time.
    That's all I'm saying.

Pack in original shipping box, generate shipping label with your UPS account and any applicable coupon codes, drop off at 3rd party shipper store front like Staples.  Cost should be reasonable.

This is exactly how I ship back an item to EVGA. I reuse the same box EVGA shipped it in, have it tapped up with a label I already purchased from UPS attached to the package and just ask for a receipt.

I think you're more likely to have the UPS store or an actual UPS location editorialize on your packaging.  Place like Staples doesn't care unless it's a hot mess.

I've done several RMAs and always shipped it back via USPS in a flat rate priority shipping box. costs like $15-20 and never ever had an issue.

costs a heck of a lot less than UPS and always gets there faster.

Most definitely got hustled. Last time I let the UPS Store actually do all the shipping label stuff, I was sending in my UPS Pension Request documents. The guy noticed where the 2Day Air Letter was going to and said congrats to me. I said thanks. He told me the charges and I kinda thought it was a bit high, but I paid it and went home. Once I got home I notice he put the package as going to a Residential Address, in which UPS charges a sure charge on. The little rat knew it was a business, but screwed me and I'm a UPS Employee.

I don't need the UPS Store editorialize my packaging. I package it, buy my label online, take it to the UPS Store the get a receipt and all is good. I highly suggest people do your their own packaging and shipping label purchasing as these UPS Stores are independently owned, not actually ran by UPS and will as wes_lodman sated, they will hustle you on the price.

Not sure why a UPS store would hassle a customer. Weird.

Interesting. Either way, if a person was going to hassle me for my packing I would scratch my head, tell them off and probably go to a different store. Wouldn't trust them to handle my package.

Still. I've packaged so many things in the past. I usually ship things the same way I get them. Package materials are usually free (if you do a lot of returns I guess). Definitely hustled though

Packaging your item is where they make the most money, they get 100% of that. As for the shipping cost, the get a percentage of that. They are going to do whatever it takes to maximize profits off people that don't know any better.

I’ve shipped via UPS many times over the years, but I’ve never had them tell me I need to repackage anything. Sounds fishy to me, like that particular UPS location you shipped from is trying to rip people off for a few extra bucks. Might be worth calling UPS customer service about it. I can understand if maybe a box you were attempting to use was beat up and/or had tears in it. Otherwise, I’ve shipped a GPU back to EVGA using the same shipping box it came in that was just big enough to fit the GPU box (the GPU’s factory foam packaging is deemed enough in the eyes of EVGA).

how did he get scammed? he realized the overcharge and took his business elsewhere. he didn't pay the price from UPS, and he's just sharing the bad experience he had.

It does seem like the last sentence is just a comparative statement and not what he actually paid.

Why would someone not want to do the cross ship?

"USPS Priority mail 2 day delivery + $1000. insurance signature required with tracking...$47.63 from FL to Ca. Sent Mon. arrived Wed."

the last phrase (bold) makes it pretty clear that he actually sent it this way via USPS instead of what UPS quoted him.
