VideoCardz - GALAX GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Boomstar pictured with PCIe Gen5 power connector “GALAX Boomstar is the China-exclusive series featuring typically 2.5 to 3-slot translucent cooling solutions. It appears that that we finally have a confirmation that even the custom RTX 3090 Ti models will ship with the new power connector, namely the 12+4 (or 16-pin) PCIe Gen5 connector delivering up to 600W of power. We can immediately see that the heat sink was specifically adopted for this design. Compared to the RTX 3090 Boomstar, the Ti model will only make use of a single 16-pin connector instead of two 8-pins. The PCIe Gen5 connector can deliver up to 600W of power, but this requires 4 data pins to be present. The leaker picture confirms just that, which means we are looking at the next-gen GPU power delivery likely to be adopted by all new cards in the coming years. GALAX RTX 3090 Ti Boomstar is expected to launch on March 29th as one of many custom designs. This model is to feature full GA102 GPU with 10752 CUDA cores, 24GB of 21 Gbps GDDR6X memory and a TDP of 450W. It is very possible that maximum power requirement will be higher for custom designs such as this.” My thoughts: This will probably be one of many leaks in the coming days. The power connector we knew was coming.

I hope there will be some sort of backwards compatible adapters with existing PSU GPU connectors.

That is the big question everyone has been debating. Guess we will have to wait until the 29th when the embargo gets lifted. My guess would be no, and we may see a whole new slew of next gen PSUs coming out in the coming months... I think we have already heard of at least 2 MFGs with next Gen PSUs.

Well, we know the prior images of the KP card that were out a month or 2 ago showed it had 2 16 pin connectors, so at the minimum let’s hope EVGA ships these things with an adaptor included to work with current PSUs. Will only be a matter of time until the new PSUs come or custom sleveled adaptors are available I would think, for those who don’t want to replace a perfectly good prior gen PSU.

I can see EVGA and Seasonic offering these new cables for sale to older gen PSUs. I'd hate to see both of my PSUs become obsolete.

I sure hope you are right. I not long ago got a 1000W G6 figuring I would “future proof” my wattage needs (silly me, forgot about PCIE 5.0) , and I don’t want to upgrade again that fast. But I also have sleeved replacement cables from CableMod that look sharp, so it will stink to have to downgrade to a stock cable or adaptor of some kind, at least until 3rd party replacement options are available.

No joke, we need to be able to keep using our current power supplies.

Just read a little bit of the Tomshardware article by Aris. Here's a quote from pg2 "You cannot just take an old PSU platform, mount a 12VHPWR connector, and state that you are ATX v3.0 compatible, and we will see below why." article https://www.tomshardware....el-atx-v3-psu-standard

I would assume that it will at least be for this generation have an adapter. Nobody has those PSU yet and to make it required would just make it impossible to find the PSU that supports them even if you get lucky enough to get the card.

Yeah there is no way anyone could use a 3090 Ti if they don't provide an adaptor this time at least. But for 40 series if we want to be cynical, it will just lead to every board partner pulling a Newegg and bundling every GPU with a PSU, a new one meant for that card. Sure hope something like what would never happen but the last 2 years make it seem like anything is possible on that front.

Looks like this connector will work with the previous adapter cable that comes with the 3090 FE, but you'll be limited to 500w when using the older adapter cable.

Limited to only 500W you say? I am more than ok with that. I see 529th mentions in another thread that Toms Hardware article author (mentioned above) says that 600w will only be for water cooled cards. I've not yet delved into water cooling master race, so an FTW3 Ultra on air for 500 watts is fine by me. Say If TDP is 450w and an Ultra goes up to 500W on the slider, well 3 8-pin to an adaptor and the PCIE slot have you covered at 525W I would think. If I am off base let me know!

It's so silly. Why don't they use at least one if those pins for something useful? Like remote voltage sensing or some other form of smart feedback? This standard is in the stone age.
