I have an Asus Z690 Hero board and an EVGA 1000 P2 PSU.  On the MB are (2) 8 pin CPU power connectors.  These are on the Top left side of the board.  Thought I was good to go with this PSU, but got stuck here.

The cables that came with the PSU are pinned different, ie won't plug in on the board.  These are 2 separate 4 pins.  The shape is different on the plastic portion of the connector.   Anyone else seen this or know where to get cables that will work?

They should as the 8-pin MB connectors are standard.  You should have two cables that are marked "CPU" on the plug end that connects to the PSU.

Maybe you are trying to connect the PSU end of EVGA's cable to the motherboard, and the motherboard end of EVGA's cable to the PSU. In other words, the cable might be pinned differently on the PSU end, but the end which connects to the motherboard should be an industry standard. Either you got a cable with a manufacturing defect, or you are doing something wrong.

That is what I was thinking as well.

Nah, the PSU end is pinned correctly, but the Lock tab on that end is Narrow.  So it will plug into both ends.  The Double 4 end is clip locked with two wider lock tabs and will not plug into the PSU, the clips make it two wide on the clip part.

I got it working and plugged in.  The rounded off pins will plug into squared pin holes.  Board powered up and it's working Hoohaw!
