I like pc part picker for finding components. Lists prices from several vendors, checks compatibility and has reviews.
Last.FM used to be a lot better.

Sometimes you can save a lot of money buying second hand motherboards/ram/CPUs, the type of component which suffers very little wear over time. Here's a tip I figured from my last build, go microATX format unless you're planning to build a PC for mining or something. You'll never, ever use all the slots in a microATX format motherboard, let alone a ATX format, and it saves a ton of space on your desk having a mATX format case.

How accommodating have you found microATX been for different parts? I went the miniITX route and I love my box, but it is a bit more expensive and I'm limited in what parts I can use.

A good mATX case is just as accomodating as an ATX case, even for the biggest GPU models for example. It holds the typical setup just as well as an ATX case, but takes less room (and, on a personal note, looks better aesthetically since everything is more cleanly fit together rather than it looking cavernous in there :p ) Also they're typically the least expensive in the market, if that matters.

It would help if you needed a video card or if you didn't need a video card, it would also help if you specified a budget. If you need a video card, you might be better off getting a pre-built since video cards are scarce at best. If you have a video card that's somewhat older but would still suffice for a while, there are tons of easy recommendations depending on your budget.

I'm a bad example, my case is huge - but I've wondered about mATX builds too. It sounds like a viable option as long as airflow isn't restricted and standard component sizes aren't an issue. I'll probably go that direction with my next build.

I watched a video on YouTube called How to Build a PC - Step by Step (full build guide) on the Tech Source YouTube channel. I have NEVER built a computer but plan to once I secure a GPU. My confidence level went up measurably after watching that entire video.

I'm a big fan of Microcenter if you have one near you. They have the best CPU prices, and will often give you a bundle discount on motherboards. It's also worth checking them out for SSDs, memory, etc. Sometimes it's not any cheaper than online, but I like that instant gratification.

def use YouTube look for videos from gamers nexus, Jayz 2cents and LTT they have very informational building videos and go over some basic stuff, just keep in mind sometimes its the little things that cause the biggest issues, i think it was last year jay z and Steve were given pc's to trouble shoot , its a heck of a long video but that one was great , especially Steve he just rebuilt the entire pc , lots of good info in that one for sure .

Step 1: Make sure you have GPU before-hand Step 2: Buy parts Step 3: ????? Step 4: Pr0fit Jokes asise, if you don't have a GPU then you're kinda out of luck unless you want to buy a CPU that has integrated graphics (which may be a bad choice taking into consideration what you want to do with your build). The only reason I built my new PC was that I was able to buy all the new parts and reuse my old 1070. I certainly don't have any issues with it.

I Regret going atx, Thought I'd be needing it for my various drives and for the fan headers. Just do some research and look at the manuals for the motherboard you're going to build/buy and if you have a ton of features left unused go down in form factor.

Since GPUs are impossible to get, I would actually consider buying a prebuild. I know it sucks all the fun out of it, but it's going to be so much less pain. Just for context, I'm saying this as someone who's determined to build my own and I have everything except a GPU (had to use my old 970).

Step 1: Decide AMD or Intel Step 2: Decide socket type for potential future upgrade Step 2: Decide Motherboard Form Factor(ITX; mATX; ATX) Step 4: Hit Ebay or r/buildapcsales or r/hardwareswap if you're on a budget. Step 5: Source GPU(Nvidia 10 or 16 series) from Newegg Shell Shocker daily deals(3 AM EST) or email promo deals(3:47 AM EST) Step 6: Build out other parts(CPU; RAM; Air or Liquid cooling; Storage; Peripherals; etc.) from deals on Newegg, EVGA, Ebay, Reddit, Best Buy[?], etc.

There are single-rail and multi-rail PSUs. 9 out of 10 people are only going to need single rail PSUs and don't gain anything for their use cases by going multi-rail. It's not critical for a gaming PC build.

Hardest thing about building a PC this time around is finding a GPU at a decent fair price.

+1 Totally agree with that. At the moment it's maybe better to buy a complete rig, because its nearly impossible to get a GPU for a decent price.

If GPU availability is a problem, get a prebuilt with a case, motherboard and GPU that you like. Then you can upgrade CPU, RAM, cabling, fans, etc at your leisure.

always buy 1 level beyond more than you need. if you need 600gb of storage, buy 1tb if you need 17gb of ram, buy 32gb if you need 750W of PSU, buy 850W etc.

Thanks so much for the response. Good to know. I apologize. I just see different ones advertised and as a first time computer builder, it just seems like I'm in a world where I don't always speak the language.
