In brief: As if the GPU/CPU shortage wasn't enough of a headache for PC owners, it appears concerns that Chia mining would impact the storage industry were warranted. According to a new report, Adata has seen its solid-state drive orders increase 500% this month, with large-capacity SSDs experiencing exceptionally high demand.

The Chia blockchain uses a 'proof of space and time' model instead of 'proof of work' (Bitcoin) or 'proof of stake' (Etherium 2.0). People can mine or farm the crypto by allocating their unused disk space, along with a time factor tied in for increasing the blockchain's overall security.
Chia isn't tradeable until May 3, but there's already been a surge in demand for large capacity hard drives and SSDs in China. DigiTimes reports that orders for Adata's high-capacity SSDs have risen 400% to 500% in April compared to the previous month

Earlier this month, Jiahe Jinwei, China's fourth-largest memory manufacturer, said all its Gloway and Asgard-branded 1TB and 2TB NVMe SSDs were sold out.
We're hearing more reports that demand for drives is starting to expand outside of Asia. Given that component shortages are increasing the price of SSD controllers, Chia mining could exacerbate the problems of low drive availability and high prices.

So far I haven't seen a shortage affecting retail too much in the USA, but that could change.

Chia coin is a crypto coin that is POST
    https://www.chia.net/faq/

POW - proof or work - so lots of computation - GPU INTENSIVE
POS  - proof of stake - less computation - mostly algorithm Generated - cpu - ie server node
POTS/POST-  proof of time and space - requiring lots of storage space and the time to read and store it - ie HDD and SSD intensive

    https://golden.com/wiki/Proof-of-spacetime_(PoSt)

Proof of Space is a cryptographic technique where provers show that they allocate unused hard drive space for storage space. In order to be used as a consensus method, Proof of Space must be tied to Proof of Time. PoT ensures that block times have consistency in the time between them and increases the overall security of the blockchain.

Hopefully budget drives with lower endurance ratings won't be affected.
Chia mining could wear out QLC drives very quickly, I doubt miners would want them.

This has been in the tech news for a couple of weeks... it's crazy that we now have another shortage to worry about

I don't think it will be a shortage because of this. Even though people is mining it, they don't even know which will be the price of that crypto. So, we cannot say it will be a shortage if we don't know how much a chia will cost.

I hope this crypto fails. We don't need another consumer part shortage.

More specifically, I don't want one because I still haven't brought my NVMes yet.

Does anyone know that when Bitcoin and Ethereum become un-mineable will there always be coins to mine or eventually all coins will be just what they are and mining will no longer be a thing?

HDD/SSD mining is a little terrifying. SSDs with their limited writes (and probably a lot of consumers not aware of this) and a higher likelihood of consumer HDDs failing with constant use...

I'm doing a little ether mining now when my rig isn't being used for gaming, but I don't want to kill the lifespan of my drives too. No thanks!

Bitcoin isn't mined on GPUs anymore, when you see mining farms it will always be Ethereum or some other coin. Last estimate I saw was ~2140 for Bitcoin to mine out, it's 89% mined out and the closer it gets the longer it will take to finish. But again it's only profitable with ASICs. Etherium is apparently the last day of this year, then they are merging proof of stake systems... and I don't really know what happens to Eth from there.

Pretty interesting seeing videos of some chia rigs. A few are just rows and rows of external HDD's plugged into USB hubs.
