AMD Zen 5 "Strix Point" Processors Rumored To Feature big.LITTLE Core Design | TechPowerUp

AMD launched the 7 nm Zen 3 microarchitecture which powers Ryzen 5000 processors in late 2020, we expect AMD to follow this up with a Zen 3+ on 6 nm later this year and a 5 nm Zen 4 in 2022. We are now beginning to receive the first rumors about the 3 nm Zen 5 architecture which is expected to launch in 2024 in Ryzen 8000 series products. The architecture is reportedly known as "Strix Point" and will be manufactured on TSMC's 3 nm node with a big.LITTLE core design similar to the upcoming Intel Alder Lake and the Apple M1. The Strix Point lineup will consist exclusively of APUs and could feature up to 8 high-performance and 4 low-performance cores which would be less than what Intel plans to offer with Alder Lake. AMD has allegedly already set graphics performance targets for the processors and that they will bring significant changes to the memory subsystem but with rumors for a product 3 years away from launch take them with a healthy dose of skepticism.

I'm really happy with AMD's progress with their CPUs. In my opinion AMD continues to improve their processors at a good pace and with better results than Intel.

Really hoping that's not true. Last I heard Lisa or Papermaster indicated AMD had no plans for it, but that was an older interview.

People really do not grasp the serious complexities and problems a heterogenous CPU design creates on a PC, it is nothing like an ARM system.

Only way to complete in power efficiency with Apple M1 unfortunately.
I sincerely hope that for desktop/(or at least HEDT) users, there will still be conventional offerings.

SO what is Strix, I keep seeing it popped up on some of the GPUs. Forgive me for my ignorance I'm new to specifics like this, GPUs and building PCs.

    • Intel Core i9-10850 3.6 GHz 10-core
    • Asus PRIME Z490-A
    • Corsair iCUE H150i ELITE CAPELLZ 75 CFM
    • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080
    • Crucial Ballistix 32 GB (2x16 GB) DDR4-3200
    • Samsung 970 Evo 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME
    • Samsung 870 QVO 2 TB 2.5" SSD
    • Fractal Design Meshify S2

Hopefully Intel can claw their way back into the running with their new factories:

I was always an Intel guy but running a 5600X in my current build. I just like competition--keeps prices down and innovation flowing.

Nothing power efficient about an 8+8 chip design, which is what the flagship Alder Lake chip is expected to have. It is not being done for power efficiency on the desktop.

Intel is spending a tiny fraction of everyone else. A tiny fraction!

    Intel - $20billion over 3 years.
    TSMC - $100 billion over 3 years
Samsung - $116 billion across the decade
SK Hynix - $106 billion in 3 years (just for DRAM fabs)
Global Foundries  doubled its regular investment to $1.4B for next year, and they're not doing node development.
UMC announced a $3.6 billion investment in it's 28nm fab

All things considered, Intel is making a very small investment in its fabs...  If you factor in Intel's size and the time scales involved, proportionally Intel is making the smallest investment of everyone on that list even GloFo (since GloFo's 1.4B was just for a single year).

"ROG Strix" is just a brand name over at ASUS. "Strix Point" is a codename for a series of future AMD hardware. If you've heard of "Strix" previously, it's probably the ASUS branding.
