Only way to complete in power efficiency with Apple M1 unfortunately.
I sincerely hope that for desktop/(or at least HEDT) users, there will still be conventional offerings.
Nothing power efficient about an 8+8 chip design, which is what the flagship Alder Lake chip is expected to have. It is not being done for power efficiency on the desktop.

Hopefully Intel can claw their way back into the running with their new factories:
https://www.cnbc.com/2021/03/23/intel-is-spending-20-billion-to-build-two-new-chip-plants-in-arizona.html
I was always an Intel guy but running a 5600X in my current build. I just like competition--keeps prices down and innovation flowing.
Intel is spending a tiny fraction of everyone else. A tiny fraction!
Intel - $20billion over 3 years.
TSMC - $100 billion over 3 years
Samsung - $116 billion across the decade
SK Hynix - $106 billion in 3 years (just for DRAM fabs)
Global Foundries doubled its regular investment to $1.4B for next year, and they're not doing node development.
UMC announced a $3.6 billion investment in it's 28nm fab
All things considered, Intel is making a very small investment in its fabs... If you factor in Intel's size and the time scales involved, proportionally Intel is making the smallest investment of everyone on that list even GloFo (since GloFo's 1.4B was just for a single year).
