PCI-SIG has confirmed that version 0.7 of the PCIe 6.0 standard has been released to the organisation's members, bringing the high bandwidth interconnect one step closer to widespread adoption. While PCIe 4.0 remains the new hotness in the PC market, hardware enthusiasts should know that PCI-SIG, the organisation behind the standard, plans to bring the performance of its interconnection standard to new heights. The PCIe 5.0 standard has already been ratified, and full PCIe 6.0 specification is due to be released in 2021.

PCIe 6.0 will be the new hotness when it comes to PC interconnectivity, packing a 2x increase in transfer speeds over PCIe 5.0, a 4x boost in raw bit rate over PCIe 4.0 and a whopping 8x improvement over what PCIe 3.0 configuration can deliver. For context, that allows a single PCIe 6.0 lane to offer users as much bandwidth as a PCIe 3.0 8x lane configuration, which is more than enough bandwidth for most of today's graphics cards.  Right now, PCIe 6.0 has met most of the design requirements of the standard and has exceeded expectations in some regards. Even so, improvements still need to be made with regards to power consumption, though the addition of a new L0p power state should address these complaints.

With PCIe 6.0, PCI-SIG will add a new form of error correction called Forward Error Correction (FEC), which will help to improve the reliability of PCIe 6.0 and help to increase the standard's bandwidth efficiency. Combine this with PAM4 signalling, and PCIe 6.0 is due to deliver the bandwidth requirements of the standard with ease.

PCIe 6.0 is designed to meet the needs of future devices within the PC and enterprise markets, with Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, cloud computing and data storage being primary concerns for the industry. With 800G Ethernet cards coming this year, and even faster standards being on the horizon, faster PCIe interconnects will become vital for the industry moving forward. With PCIe 6.0, PCI-SIG plans to meet the performance needs of the industry while doing so at a low cost. The backwards compatibility of the standard will also be useful for many markets, as it allows some older hardware to be maintained withing newer networks.

To put the performance of PCIe 6.0 into context, it could enable M.2 devices to deliver speeds that are up to eight times faster than today's Samsung 970 Pro series SSD, which is widely regarded as one of the best performing PCIe 3.0 M.2 SSDs on the market. Another way to put it is with PCIe 6.0, the performance of a PCIe 3.0 16x configuration is equivalent to two PCIe 6.0 lanes.

PCIe 6.0 will enable higher levels of bandwidth for those who need it while granting PC users access to today's bandwidth levels over fewer PCIe lanes. The only problem with this rapid evolution is that new PCIe 4.0 devices will soon find themselves replaced with PCIe 5.0 and then PCIe 6.0 over the next 5 or so years. That said, should we complain about technology progressing too quickly?

In my personal opinion I wonder if the technology is moving too fast?

which was first chicken or the egg .... they need the Standard to be in place .. manufactures will then decide on production viabilities

    (excerpts from OP link)
    - "The PCIe 5.0 standard has already been ratified, and full PCIe 6.0 specification is due to be released in 2021"

Well that sounds very nice, unfortunately we're only just recently starting to see PCIe 4.0 hardware availability becoming mainstream lol. By the time hardware reaches PCIe 6.0 as mainstream, the boffins will be releasing PCIe 12.0.

Intel will be adopting PCIe 5 in the server space in 2021 and AMD probably will be doing the same give or take a year. Intel needs 5.0 to enable Compute Express Link. This means we may see faster than usual adoption of 5.0 on consumer hardware...

The carrot and stick marketing approach to hardware evolution is a bit silly. Evolutionary change in tech sold as the next Jesus tech gets old after awhile. Next year it'll be telling you why the dots on your TV aren't small enough and you must need 8K now. In 2022, they'll say the dots on your 8K aren't bright enough or the blacks are too muddy and sell you OLED variant. In 2023 they'll come out with a 240hz version because apparently the sync tearing was apocalyptic. Keep chasing that carrot everyone.

Yes... because it means Zen 4 will be closer  A GPU is one thing, but buying into Zen 3 would be an entire new rig and I hate doing that right before inflection points. Zen 4 will have several inflection points going for it and will be a good platform to buy into. Must resist that Zen 3 temptation...

Not 6, but we will see 5 if Intel can meet it's launch timetables. That's a big if  Both of them will have consumer+server PCIe 5.0 in 2022 from the looks of it.

PCIe 4.0 came out in 2017, but Intel have yet to release a HEDT CPU for it (Intel Rocket Lake is due Q1 2021 with PCIe 4.0), and AMD launched their first PCIe 4.0 CPUs in mid-late 2019, so I'm guessing it will be a few years before we see PCIe 6.0 in any gaming CPUs. I am waiting for Rocket Lake before I decide to upgrade, so unless you really need to right now, I'd wait and see how Rocket Lake looks and then make a decision between that and AMD.

GPUs are clearly not utilizing the 3.0 and 4.0 bandwidth we already have. But I wonder what the speed of 5.0 or 6.0 could do for other devices? Better read/write speeds for name? Better local networking?

What do you think would see the biggest benefit from this extra bandwidth?

Depends if you're going to buy today's CPUs later, or were wanting chips for next year. Zen 4 will be a new socket, and Rocket Lake will be the last on the current LGA1200 socket.

SSDs, because they are limited to x4 lanes. Otherwise nothing really needs PCIe 5 bandwidth for consumer tech... A single x1 PCIe 4.0 link already well exceeds the bandwidth from a 10G NIC, so 5 won't do anything there. Getting a bit worried about the power draw/cost of PCIE 6 though, 5 will already be high and 6 will increase it still more because of PAM4 signaling.

You should be good to upgrade now but probably two or three years in the future you will see PCIe 6.0 support on motherboards.

that's a very nice leap in tech gen.
    48 months to pci-e 6 and DDR5
it will be a nice period to upgrade....  NO COVID ( hopefully) + gen 4000 + pci-e 6 ( altho 5 would be just enough) and DDR5 ...  2023/2024 looks promising

IF everything's goes normally ... IF

promised my gf after in 2019 spending a massive 770 euros in a 1080TI i would NOT upgrade for 4 to 5 years... it's a decent period...  let's see how things go from now on.
