In a video message posted on her Twitter timeline, AMD CEO Dr Lisa Su confirmed that the company's next-generation "Zen 3" microarchitecture is coming out "later this year." Speaking in context of 7/7 (a year since AMD debuted high-performance CPU- and GPU- architectures on the same day, leveraging 7 nm), and the Ryzen 3000XT series processor announcement, Dr Su stated "As you know with Ryzen, we're always on a journey, a journey to push the highest performance that we can for our users and our fans. So Zen 3 is exactly that. Zen 3 is looking great in the labs, we're on track to launch later this year, and I can't wait to tell you more about it."

I'm looking forward to this.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X,  Corsair Mp700 Pro M.2, 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5  X670E Steel Legend, MSI RTX 4090 Associate Code: H5U80QBH6BH0AXF. I am NOT an employee of EVGA

My guess is that's what they'll be teasing at CES 2021 in January.

Assuming there is one... or maybe they will just ban travel from certain countries like the US. CES 2021, if it exists, is not going to be anything like prior years...

I don't follow AMD too much but slowly moving that way for a possibly future CPU/MB upgrade since Intel is stagnant atm and for a few more years I'm hearing.  This is assuming my current RAM (Corsair DDR4 3200 32GB) and everything else I have is a non-issue.  That includes x2 M.2s @ x4 and a x16 GPU (4K Gaming) with a boat load of SATA connections via HDs.

With that said, is the 3950X worth the purchase atm or is it worth waiting for their next gen and when and what will that be called?  Is the current Zen 3 and when is Zen 4?

Also, since the 3950X is 24 pcie lanes (20 cpu + 4 chipset), does that mean I have 20 PCIe lanes for everything else?  If so, that would leave me x4 lanes missing from my current 24 lanes being used in total. (M.2 x4, M.2 X4, x16 GPU)

Just wait, unless your rig is bust.

Assuming your current rig is decent I would wait as while the 3950x is the best at everything but gaming(a bit be hind best intel) the Ryzen 4k series will just be all out best.

Also to answer your other question you would be fine but would even have more room for another NVME if went X570. (B550 is exactly the same except chipset link is x4 Gen 3)
    x16 from CPU
x4 M.2 from CPU (current Intel mainstream doesn't have this)
x4(gen 4) to chipset (same as Intel except 2x faster) Can add up to 2 NVME Gen 3 at full speed since link is twice the speed)

So X570 can have 3 NVME full speed.(Assuming Chipset NVME drives are gen 3)

Zen 3 is what launches this fall. Zen 4 launches at the end of 2021 and will require DDR5. Unless you have a real need, I highly suggest waiting until this fall. Zen 3 will deliver IPC improvements.

24 lanes means you have 16 lanes for the GPU, 4 lanes for the M.2 drive, and 4 lanes for the chipset. The chipset will have its own PCIe lanes for extra stuff just like an Intel rig.

Ok so I'll stick around to see what Zen 3 has in store.  Clearly my RAM should be compatible with it and just hope they bump the PCIe lanes a bit.

Edit: Scratch that.  The ram is 32 GB 3200 Quad channel.

Could still use the memory, just as 4 sticks at 3200 dual channel

I'm currently X58, Z97 and X99. It's time for me up upgrade my primary rig soon. Will hold off for Zen 3 architecture as this will be the first time in a decade that Intel has not been my target platform. Last time I went AMD is a Phenom II a decade ago. Windows 10 is a pig. It's pretty much forcing my hand on the upgrade.

I'm exactly in the same boat as you Brad.  Never used a AMD CPU but have with their GPUs.  I'll either upgrade to Zen 3 or wait for intel but that already feels like an eternity.

I was an AMD Athlon X2/Phenom user until the X58 platform released. It was just too good to ignore... just like AMD is now with the Ryzen line.
