Hey all, It's been a long time since I've updated my current Rig. I've been out of the loop for a while on new releases of hardware and wanted to stop by and see if I could pick a few brains on a good solid long term build for 2020. My current Rig's config are in my Sig below if you'd like to see, That being said, I'm not here to break the bank but always would like the option to upgrade a few things later, I.E watercooling ect. Currently I've Narrowed down a few things I'd like to start and then have the suggestions come in after that. -- Case = Obsidian Series 750D Airflow Edition Full Tower ATX Case -- Mobo = EVGA Z390 FTW, 123-CS-E397-KR, LGA 1151-- GPU = Unsure , 2060 seems fine but still only 100-300$ cheaper than the 2070/2080 series . I'm only looking for 1 GPU atm. -- PSU = Figure'd I'd Stick with EVGA or Corsair like I normally do -- Ram = Same Corsair , not sure what kind tho -- CPU = Kinda Lost here clearly I need a 1151 socket , but the 1151 / 1151 (300 series ) options confuse me lol Like I said I've been out of the game for a while, I'm looking for this Rig to last me a good long while. 5 years at least I don't mind spending a few extra bucks now to not have to upgrade later. If this helps pick out things or suggestion be narrowed down. I play games like ( Overwatch, WoW, SC2, Steam games, MMO's, (currently couldn't Run DOOM 2016 Would like to) ) My spec needs change quite a bit since I'm an all over gamer. But I hope this at least narrows down my requirements for a solid new 2020 Rig. With a Z390 board you will be able to use any of the 8XXX or 9XXX series intel CPUs. The current fastest gaming processor is the i9 9900K or the “KS” variant of said processor. As for GPU while the 2060 would be a fine choice. However if you intend it to last multiple years and let you game comfortably it will leaving wanting more sooner rather than later. I’d suggest trying to stretch your budget a little more and get a 2080 or wait a few months and see what Nvidia‘s next GPU will deliver. they are rumored to be announced in a couple months. At the very least they will drive down costs of current GPUs.

I think the 9700 is a fine choice for gaming....but like CraptacularOne said...I'd likely spend the money on the 2070 or 2080 and have better staying power...

I don't think I'd limit myself on memory type ..and I'd have a look around at other manufacturers ..

-- Case = Obsidian Series 750D Airflow Edition Full Tower ATX Case
I have this case. Really well constructed. There are two versions...one where there is a front plate that includes a filter, and the other without the plate and a smaller filter. Go for the one with the plate. Easier to clean and airflow is a bit better.
-- Mobo = EVGA Z390 FTW, 123-CS-E397-KR, LGA 1151
I prefer EVGA or Asus. Can't go wrong either way
-- GPU = Unsure , 2060 seems fine but still only 100-300$ cheaper than the 2070/2080 series . I'm only looking for 1 GPU atm.
If you can get a 2070 for only $100 more...do it.
-- PSU = Figure'd I'd Stick with EVGA or Corsair like I normally do
Can't go wrong with either.
-- Ram = Same Corsair , not sure what kind tho
GSkill is really good ram as well...might be a bit cheaper and sometimes you can get tighter timings.
-- CPU = Kinda Lost here clearly I need a 1151 socket , but the 1151 / 1151 (300 series ) options confuse me lol
Top of the line, right now, is the 9900KS, but I prefer the 9900K. You can probably overclock the 9900K to the level of KS, but there will be a difference. KS only comes with ONE year warranty, vs 9900K having a THREE. The LGA1151 is current for now, with the impending LGA1200 in April or May.
Like I said I've been out of the game for a while, I'm looking for this Rig to last me a good long while. 5 years at least I don't mind spending a few extra bucks now to not have to upgrade later.
If this helps pick out things or suggestion be narrowed down. One more question...have you considered an AIO for cooling? Or are you going to stay air cooled? AIO: I have the EVGA CLC 280 and it is great, for me. Air cooled...look into Noctua

@bobmitch I normally do a Custom water loop with EK products once I find the MOBO / GPU parts from them I don't tend to run air on my CPU from the start, but the GPU loop can be added later.

You can save some more Money on top of all the other discounts ---> Just use anyone's Associate code when you place that order Looks like you keep your hardware ... look at the EVGA Optional extended warranty to get total of 5yr or 10yr coverage

The only thing to consider with buying directly from here is the shipping costs are usually expensive and if they have representation in your state you will also be charged sales tax accordingly. Unfortunately (for me anyway) is that these added costs usually far outweigh any small discount you’ll get from an affiliate code and I why I usually just buy from Newegg or Amazon.
I wish I had a Microcenter near me. Their in store sales are very very good

I normally give EVGA the 1st chance at least lol being a fanboy and all, But ya, gotta pinch those pennies when I can , I'm already at a grand total of $3,460.00 for this new rig and I still need CD drive, SSD's , HHD's , BenQ 144hrtz Monitor, 1 more BenQ Side Monitor ( Triple Monitor setup ), a new Mic lol. I'm looking at $4,500.00 at the end of everything or more. xD

Taxes are a pain...no question. As far as the memory demand of 32/64? Depends on how demanding Sony Vegas is. You should be good for rendering with the 8 core / 16 thread. I do Adobe Premiere...and use 32 GB on my system...but also...my memory is quad channel....where your system will be dual. Not a major concern...I would think

Cool ya this i7 960 takes a bit and with only 12GB of ram , even small videos recorded with OBS in MP4 take over an hour, I've change OBS to CQP CQ level 30 recently and the recordings look great but the files sizes are what got me , super tiny. I have yet to edit one with sony vegas yet but will see how it turns out and how much time it saves on this old rig lol. Thanks for the help :)

You opposed to an AMD Ryzen CPU? Also, eVGA motherboards havent been that rock solid passed few years, I prefer AsRock & MSI MB's and EVGA GPU's.

Here's the start of a pretty good build, but I'd wait it out for the Z490 platform to release in a few months. 9700K, 2080S FTW3, fast memory and an MSI MB that will support it, EVGA PSU and AIO. HP EX950 2TB, best bang for the buck 2TB nvme. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/RqZwmg If you need 32gb ram, a 2x16gb 4000CL19 kit with MSI MB or a Asus MB with a fast 4x8gb. Or any MB with 3200CL14 4x16gb kit. People generally want Samsung B-die. MSI has some of the best dual stick fast memory support (daisy chain), Asus generally has the best quad stick support (t-topology). But check the QVL's. If you need 64gb, it's not going to be fast or it's going to be really expensive and hard to support. 3200CL14 is pretty good and runs on almost everything, even 4x16 kits. If you plan on sticking with onboard sound, i would checkout the features other mfg audio software comes with. EVGA Z390 FTW audio software is just realtek basic software.
ASUS Sonic Studio III is decent. Select MSI motherboards come with decent audio software for gamers too.
