Hey guys. Booted up the kids PC today and heard a weird noise and then white smoke. Issue is his PC is in a 1000D as an itx build and seeing what fried isn’t easy. I yanked the psu and it looks ok and smells fine. The only place I can smell anything is the vid card. So, is it safe to unplug the card’s PCI power and leave it in there and use the mobo onboard video to see what happens? I’d yank the card entirely but it’s on a water loop. And no, no leaks visible....

Safe? Impossible to determine without knowing where/what fried.

Based on your description this sounds like the video card. If the video card doesn't work in another PC then that item is faulty.

Looks like you might have to break your loop to troubleshoot.

Yes, Card could have a short to ground PCIe slot still provides Power to GPU. Unless your MB has switches to turn PCIe slot Off Bulkhead fittings make nice emergency - double female G1/4 threaded fitting. If you have one just screw 2 fittings - one each side & bypass the water block for GPU

Pull the card away from the MB if the loop is flexible. I've done that before. if not, you may have to do a loop bypass (cut the card out and join the ends)

Hopefully it’s just the Motherboard and the video card is ok. Still sucks to lose the motherboard.

A motherboard loss is a pain in the rear. Hopefully you can get everything sorted and running again. Good luck.
