TSMC, one of the largest semiconductor manufacturing foundries, has officially confirmed that it will stop all orders from Chinese company Huawei Technologies. The Taiwanese silicon manufacturer has decided to comply with US regulations and will officially stop processing orders for Huawei on September 14th of this year. Precisely, the company was receiving orders from HiSilicon, a subsidiary of Huawei Technologies that focuses on creating custom silicon. Under the new regulation by the US, all non-US companies must apply for a license to ship any American-made technology to Huawei. Being that many American companies like KLA Corporation, Lam Research, and Applied Materials ship their tools to many manufacturing facilities, it would be quite difficult for Huawei to manufacture its silicon anywhere. That is why Huawei has already placed orders over at Chinese SMIC foundry.

Of course with Huawei unable to have any chips produced at TSMC means that TSMC can accept more orders from their existing customers in my opinion.

    Re: TSMC
Under normal conditions, yes. It remains to be seen if non-Chinese sales will be sufficient in a Covid world to make up for lost sales. There’s a lot of bluster out there about “huge demand”. I doubt it. We’ve been burning through $2 trillion in stimulus that ends next month in the US. The rest of the world isn’t doing much better.

Even if Huawei *hadn’t* been banned - TSMC would still be in for rough times. This makes things much more difficult.

Not true at all. I forgot which but one of the analyst firms that tracks this stuff indicated PC industry shipments increased to 2009 levels. Existing US warehouse inventory got cleaned out after the first stimulus check, and it's likely there will be a second spike if another stimulus check passes. Everyone needs decent desktops or better laptops for at-home schooling or simply working from home and that need is going to increase now that most school districts in the US appear to be going online-only this fall.

Laptops use Intel chips (14nm built at Intel fabs). Most have integrated graphics. Nothing using TSMC and 7nm.

TSMC is making most of its money from Apple.

I think this sort of thing is going to actually hurt western silicon production, not help it. It will mean that China will invest in it's own foundry operations and become more technologically independent without any ethical constraints. If China does everything in-house, it means our laws and regulations can be wholly circumvented for their personal gain. Being sanctioned economically is not going to work on someone the size of China who is capable of market manipulation. They will see it as an economic attack on their government and retaliate in kind with internal advancement. China is having their technological and industrial revolution right now. Similar transformative things will happen in China that happened in the US a 100 years ago that will make them a country to be reckoned with.
