Hey guys, I have a pair of JBL 660GTI in my doors. I installed them about 4 years ago. Recently I decided to add sound deadening to my doors. When I pulled off the door panels to apply the sound deadening, I discovered that the panel sits too close to the woofer in the door and is damaging the surrounds. I'm looking for ideas for how to create more space in front of the woofer. I think I'm probably going to have to cut the panel, but am open to other ideas.

get a piece of PVC pipe larger than the diameter of the speaker and cut sections to prevent the panel from touching the speaker.   Band saw.  you could also surround the speaker (like a donut) with foam that is higher than the speaker.  There's lots of thick foam you can glue in place with hot glue.   the inside of some gun cases some to mind.

Decent ideas Delirious. I am wondering about the speaker mount, it looks to be riveted in place. Is there any way to inset the speaker in the mount, tweak it per say. You may not need much, 1/4 " or so. There would have to be room at the rear of the speaker to do this of course. Time for custom door panels! I guess you could find a scrapyard set to play with possibly, if the originals were important.

Looks like a bit of weather effects leakage have also been getting to them.... maybe try Crutchfield to see if those speakers are even supposed to fit in there.?

there's always wood.   You can cut a couple of 180 degree arcs with a bandsaw and put a rim around the speaker.  Hot glue them in place.

Go to walmart and look for plastic drink pitchers that you can cut into sections as a rim.  all sorts of things to keep the speaker off the panel.  You just need some sort of stand off.

Can they fit in a box surround under your seats? Its that or maybe the kick panels under the dash on the pass and driver walls..... at least there outta the way entirely then. Other than Del's ideas not a lot of other options.

I've thought about this as well. Then I thought maybe I'll try to pick up a pair of junk yard panels for my year (2011), and also a pair from 2008 and fabricate them into one using the bulk of the 2011, but the speaker grille cover for the 2008. Although that might be more difficult to fabricate than I'm imagining.

I just found these, and think they might work. They are designed to be mounted onto but I could mount them in front of the speaker instead and that would prevent the door panel from pressing on the surround.

You may have to cut plain and simple.  I would rather go to a junk yard get a similar door panel of your car and go frankestein mode on it to have many different ideas of how to proceed.

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.
