It’s universally accepted that virtually nobody removes a USB safely via Windows’ ejection method. As of Windows 10 build v1809, Microsoft is ensuring that loss of data is no longer a threat by enabling ‘quick removal’ as the default USB setting. Previously, USB devices were automatically activated in ‘better performance’ mode, optimising read and write speeds closer to what is actually advertised. Although inclined users could easily switch to quick removal if they chose to, many kept the default option which houses a small risk of losing data if USB devices are removed without utilising the proper ejection method. By swapping the defaults around in the latest update, Microsoft is attempting to safeguard unsuspecting user’s data. Unfortunately, it looks as though the patch might reset some preferences, requiring users to manually dive into the settings should they want to utilise ‘better performance’ mode.

I can't believe it's taken Microsoft this long to get around to this.

Now we have Nanny companies too! Yay...?

Put out the word, if you don't do it correctly you could lose data..here's the setting to change it to being able to yank it out..
    and leave it.

Well, this is a good move. I know a lot of people, colleagues and friends, that don't use the "Safely remove..." option and some of these people ended with broken USB sticks - corrupted data or even worse, fried USB computer ports.

    Gizas! what a mess

Great, how will this further screw up things like VR sensors? USB power mode settings is the bane of VR's existence. I can jsut imagine how this'll randomly break more stuff too.

Keep in mind it’s an option. They are finding then quick removal better for the majority of users. You can toggle it back if you understand how to safely remove a thumb drive.

I wish I didn't have to go through this process but I do every time I have a USB drive in use.  They need to change it and we need faster speeds dangnit! lol  Backing up some stuff took forever in USB 3.0 the other week.

I'm one of those rare people who remove USB drives the correct way, apparently.

Ejecting a USB drive can be stubborn at times or at least on my system.  I'd say it's a 50/50 shot I'd have to hit eject again till it gives me the green light for removal.

I can't believe people just pull them out without taking those steps.  Same rule applies to any data device whether SSD, HDD, etc.

Do you need to do this when the system is off on a hotswap or not SSD/HD?  I was under the impression you only did this for USB drives.

Might be the way I have things setup, but a few data corruptions and I learned my lesson so I take those steps with everything.

EDIT: if the system is shut down there is nothing to worry about, with it up and running I always take those steps.  That goes for any way you set things up.

classic windows .   I agree though it's a good idea of Microsoft to enable quick removal by default.

I am up for the new update, it is very useful, but i am scared that my USB would pop out from my computer after i download the update and slap me for not thinking about this sooner

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.
