Purchased in 2015, used daily since, my 980ti house finally burned down.

Event logs showed a Kernal Event ID 41: unexpected power loss or restart. My assumption was a PSU failing. Replaced the PSU only to have the same issue. Tried system on a different power strip and the GPU caught on fire in front of me.

Damage was limited to GPU and some residual carbon on the mobo.

Scary part was it wouldn’t fail immediately, i was lucky to have been looking at it when the fire occured.

That's a shame. Been a few of them reported lately on the forums.
Maybe RMA if it is under warranty or get a new GPU.

Ok so before you started getting the event id 41. Did you have an issue where it would have multiple times a minute that it would get event id 4101 (Nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered)? Also it would do event 4101 every 2-3sec then it will hard lock my computer and ill have to hit the reset button to get it back up and running. No blue screens or anything. So I know that this the normal event that generates when well you driver crashes for what ever reason. But in my case it will only happen when the computer is in idle with the screen off. I know for a fact it none of my components in the system currently but will be transferring the gpu from system to another known working system. But I am just trying to get as much info from someone that had another 980 ti go boom on them. I have this gpu in a server of mine that runs 24/7 and if it were to catch fire or do anything like that with out me home it could be very catastrophic. If you got any other info of anything happening up to the point where it caught fire that would be incredibly useful thanks.

I’d get rid of it ASAP. The 41 error is the only event error code produced. It started in January, slowly increasing in frequency until the 16th where it happened 6 times in a day. However, that was the first time it happened multiple times in the same day. It was water cooled with a NZXT Kraken 42 AIO setup which has been removed so I have the entire card visible. I can post better pictures if anyone’s interested.

Your report has become quite common here on the forum within the last half year. We are at approximately 1 report a week regarding a 900 series card burning up. Seems like within a year after the standard warranties expired, they started burning up at an accelerated rate. Seems like NVIDIA and EVGA value-engineered their cards' components correctly to maximize profit during the warranty period. Sad when that happens.

My card has developed exactly the same problem!! a year out of warranty now and POOF up in smoke. Luckily I was there watching it happen otherwise it could of set my whole rig on fire!!! This is crazy. What are EVGA doing about all these burnt out cards? Just laughing at us because it all seems to be happening just outside the warranty periods? My card was never overclocked either.....

Really putting me off buying anything evga again

The 980ti stank my whole downstairs of my house out with the smell of the card burning. Ive never seen anything like it in all my years of pc building.
