Sorry if this question has been already answered as I tried googling for an up to date answer.

I had some people inform me that their rtx 2080 XC black edition was a non-binned chip. Is there a way we can test or look at the model # to identify if the card in question has a 400A rather than a 400?

Not sure if they are telling the truth, but if they are, it seems like a bait and switch tactic to scam people out of their 50$.

Thank you for reading.

I believe that "... ULTRA" and higher use the 400A cores.  So, for example, the "FTW3 ULTRA", "XC ULTRA", or the "XC2 ULTRA GAMING", but I am pretty sure NOT the XC GAMING.

I agree that the naming scheme is super convoluted.  For one, EVGA has started to skip straight to "FTW3" and there are no "FTW or FTW2" models.  So dumb.  And what is a Gaming versus non-Gaming version?  Or Black version compared to Gaming version?  Or XC versus XC2?  It used to make sense.  We used to just have a normal version, a SC version, maybe a SSC version, and maybe a FTW version.  Then came classified, kingpin, ftw2, and ftw3.  That was starting to become stupid, but it was mostly okay.  But now what is the "normal" card versus gaming, versus XC gaming, versus black, versus XC black, versus ultra, versus XC, versus XC2, versus FTW3?  And then what if there is a FTW3 refresh?  Will it be FTW4, FTW5, and FTW6? Come on, EVGA marketing team!

I definitely agree with you that there are too many version of the same card. It is disappointing to hear that the black XC is nonbinned. Will there be a huge performance gap between a binned and nonbinned? Unfortunately, I have already ordered it.

"Huge" performance gap? Hardly any at all. You do know you can just manually overclock to gain back the clock speeds in the higher binned GPU right?

Advertised clock speeds really don't matter at all to be honest. Especially with the way GPU boost works these days with Nvidia. It's more temperature sensitive than anything. If you can keep the temps cooler the card will auto overclock itself well beyond it's "rated" boost speeds.

That's great to know! I wish there were more benchmarks between the different 2080 versions for gaming. Would help greatly visually to understand the difference.

My guess would be any card with an advertised boost clock of 1800 (which is what the nvidia 2080 fe advertises) and higher will be a 400a chip, and any card with an advertised boost clock below 1800 will be a 400 chip. 400 chips won't overclock as well as 400a chips.

My Step-Up XC Black is a 300A chip. As shown with CPU-Z.

I'll say it again, afaik and what I've read iirc, all XC chips use the "A" chip while non-XC use none "A" chip.

I think I read it somewhere in Techpowerup but I can't remember exactly where or if it was a EVGA rep from these forums.

According to CPU-Z, my 2080 XC Black Edition is a 400a chip. Not saying it's correct, but figured I'd show it.

Just got my 2080 XC Black Edition in yesterday and according to CPU-Z mine is 400a as well.  It also auto clocks to 1860mhz or so using Precision X1.

XC black using a 400A chip. I got mine several weeks ago. Pretty sure all of XC versions, including xc, xc ultra, xc black, are using 400A instead of 400. But Black edition definitely using 400.
I could get 2010-2040 stable with xc black, not very high overclocking potential anyway.

Short of the 2070 series, the 2070 XC Black is a 400, non A. It seems that's the only XC model to not have a 400A.

yeah, looks like 2070 xc black comes with base clock instead of factory OC.

I can confirm from taking it apart that my 2070 XC Black gaming from the step up program was indeed only a 400 chip.

I just open my 2080 xc black and change it to water cooling. It is a 400A chip. looks like 2070 step-up is different than 2080.

My EVGA 2080 Ti Black is a 400 chip and clocks in at 1875MHz on its own while gaming.  No OCs set here yet, etc on custom cooling.

Black is different from a XC Black.  And this thread seems to be about 2080s not Tis.  And if youre talking about a Ti its 300 and 300A not 400.

aren't all overclocked Turing GPUs A-Chips? and no OC = no A-Chip

The Black isn't overclocked so it should be a non-a-chip

I find it odd that CPU-Z displays the Code Name of a GPU, but GPU-Z doesn't.

Now I have to install CPU-Z, gahhhh.....

What more would you expect from Free Software?
CPU-Z also has been know to report incorrect information as well.
What is GPU-Shark Showing you as well as AIDA64 Extreme?

I didn't expect anything at all. I only stated that I found it odd that a CPU utility displays information about a GPU that a GPU utility doesn't.
