Currently my rig which I rebuilt a while back has been pretty rock solid however I've been wanting for a long time to upgrade the 980 to a 1070 or 1080. However I've been wondering if I should look into G-Sync instead. Not sure which would net me the biggest benefit in terms of better frame rates.

Be aware that G-Sync monitors cost more.

    Is that a X299 or a X99 MB?
    Try updating your SB drivers.

G-SYNC monitor would help with screen tearing. If screen tearing while gaming doesn't bother you or you don't really notice it. Might be better off going for a newer video card instead. I'm still using a basic 1080p monitor. I don't really notice any screen tearing while gaming. I just have a GTX 1060 6GB.

Check out some video card comparisons with the video games you currently play. See which video would be worth the upgrade for you.

The thing is I always run vsync because screen tearing is very noticeable to me and it's something that can drive me up the wall. I'm considering the idea of looking into the Freesync monitors that are Gsync capable now. However in light of Nvidia not adding support for ASS\VRR on Maxwell and older GPUs I might have to get a new GPU first.

Eh I think I may just go with the cheaper\easier route and get a 1070/1080 and then wait until prices have come down on the monitors. Right now my HP monitor is good enough for me.

Better get that 1080 quick as they are selling out and won't be making more.
