Symptoms:
Did some upgrading to my system as I wasn't a fan of my 6600k and wanted to get more fps out of ultra settings for Anthem. Mobo and CPU came first, installed a couple days prior and had no problems running with my OC'd 1080ti Strix. Install 2080ti, try using x1 to get it to 150/1025. System instability and a couple power loss' during intensive moments in Dragon Age: Inquisition (really?). After testing off and on i get rid of other instability errors but power loss occurs after 1-2 hours or during super intensive moments. CPU running roughly 45 degrees under load, GPU solidly at 74. Take it down to stock OC settings. Was able to go off and on for several hours, temps averaging 68-70 when i get another sudden power loss after a battle finishes (no intensive rendering at that moment). I did notice on occasion that the power load is going over 100% despite me having it set at 100. I wish I could say this is a 3 year old power supply that's probably failing but the psu is relatively new and hasn't had any issues up until now. Is it possibly the gpu, or is that power flux i mentioned an nvidia software/driver issue?

I had taken it down to stock x1p oc settings (core 1950mhz, ram 7000mhz) and was able to get it to run through multiple long sessions before it up and did it again at a very weird moment (still in game, battle had ended). Power supply usage per my monitors is roughly ~450w at peak, which is just over half of the supply's capabilities.

Funny you should mention this: After posting the thread I ran into this as an option hidden in a previous thread and then validated it on an r/nvidia thread that had the exact same symptoms.
 
I'm in the middle of testing this now and so far it looks like this was the issue. I never had an issue with it on my 1080ti but it looks like the amount of power the ftw3 requests of my psu is too much for a single cable to contain. Had a stress test running for about 4 hours and no power loss has occurred. We'll see how it holds up on my next session.

Let's hope that is all it was.

oh, very good call ! i always do it by default without thinking. i forgot that people with lower power supply might use a single cable.

I even use two cables with my 1600 Power Supplies.
