Hi, I just installed my new M.2 WD Black 500gb SSD but I cant find a way to make the bios or windows detect it as Drive 0, every time I get to the installation part it takes my SATA3 8TB HDD as Drive 0 and my M.2 as Drive 1, is there any way to fix this?

Whichever port you have the drive connected to, is the port it is assigned. If you want the drive to be drive 0, then you need to physically put the drive on SATA port 0.

Got to youtube and see the videos on using diskpart. Free software as it comes with Win 7,8 and 10.
I had to use this when I first got my MVMe and my MVMe SSD in order to have the computer to recognize them.
To be safe I would watch them very carefully as you can not undo what the program does (i.e., if you clean or format a drive your file will be gone forever).
You can also disk manager in windows to assign the drives (I think) and safer if you do not trust yourself.
I use EaseUS Partition Manager and EaseUS Todo to transfer my OS off a hard drive to a MVMe, SSD and leave all the other programs on the hard disk.

Why does it need to be drive "0"? Did you install the OS on the M.2 with NO other drives hooked up to board?

The only way your M2 drive will show in Windows as Drive 0 is if it's the only drive in your system. It will always show as the last drive in the system has been my experience. In other words, if you have two SATA drives and one NVME drive, the SATA drives will be drives 0 & 1 with the NVME drive being drive 2.

Bah...yeah...my answer was a bit confusing/incomplete. As you say, physical SATA connections take priority over the M.2 slot.

This is an older post but worth bumping to help others who view it. Yes, when installing an M.2 PCIe SSD your SATA III SSD will become 0, 1, 2 etc. Your M.2 will become the last available disk number.
I have two SATA III disks plugged into the Motherboard. I rarely use external drives other than a Flash Drive for BIOS updates. Therefore, the M.2 SSD was assigned driver number "2".
The operating system is installed on the M.2 SSD. I used GPT rather than MBR due to it's relationship with security and interacting with UEFI/BIOS. For what it's worth, when I make a System Image I do not use the native Backup and Restore feature in Windows 10. (now version 1903). Below is how my Disk Manager shows the disks: 0, 1 and 2. Everything works fine. I hope this screenie will help others feel comfortable about not having their M.2 SSD labeled as Disk 0. It makes no difference in performance.
