Hi all,
Getting a little concerned with my 2080 temps as of late. I've got an EVGA XC Ultra with the beefy heatsink, renowned for decent cooling. I've seen people mention that they can keep this and other similar cards at under 68C with fans at 45% or thereabouts...so having to have fans on at 80% to keep it under 75C seems a bit cack.
Have been playing Borderlands 3 this week and my temps are hitting 75/76C on the GPU. Have just tested out BFV and it's hitting the same temps on that. Of course the temps are increasing when the power limit of the card is on the higher side. I've got quite an aggressive fan curve from 60C to 80C, with fan speeds hitting 80% when the GPU hits 75C. My only issue with this is that it's bloody noisy.
The only changes I've made recently are installing an AIO which I understand will affect the temps slightly as I'm no longer bringing cool air in the front for the GPU to use, it's now warm air that's come through the rad. Unfortunately my case will not allow the fitting of a 240mm rad as an exhaust on top unless I have low profile RAM, which I do not.
I have 2 x 120mm on an rad as front intake and I have 2 x 120mm BeQuiet Silentwings 3 (one in the back, one in the top back) as exhausts. So I don't know if this is solely an airflow issue.
I know the 2080 is rated to take a decent temperature, just concerned at it getting higher than seemingly everyone else. Hell, I've seen people with OC'd cards under full load and still maintaining 70C with a 75% fan curve, so something is amiss. I don't want to have to make too many compromises (set fans super loud, reduce power limit etc) with this card as it's a monster! Ambient temp here is around 19-22C and GPU idles around 33C.
Corsair Carbide 275R case, Msi X570 Pro Carbon, 2 x Corsair Vengeance Pro RAM, Deepcool Captain 240mm AIO, EVGA XC ULTRA RTX 2080. Playing in 1440P on a mix of high/ultra settings.
Many thanks in advance!

If you happen to have a house fan or can borrow one from a friend take the side cover off and allow the fan to blow air into the chassis. Check the temps and see if there is any significant difference.

Will try that this evening. If it’s significantly lower, are we looking at an airflow issue?

Yes. If the temps vary quite a bit then airflow is an issue in my opinion.

I never had good experience with cooling components inceasing number of case fans only. AIO System will resolve temperatures no matter if you have case fans or not, but must be in exhaust configuration. That mean radiator on grill and high performance fan to push air through radiator. 20C lower temperaturs then air instantly. Comparing temperatures with other people because they have same cards is not always accurate. Different game, different settings, different monitor and refresh rate, VSync Enabled or Disabled or Adaptive, all of them could pump up 10-15C higher temperatures...different Case as well, people install 3-4 RGB Fans in case just like that. They give you information My temps are max 65C on 45% fan speed. Normal fan speed for air cooled GPU is 60-70-80%. Personally I imagine RTX2080 performance... It's very hard to believe that some RTX2080 work on 65C on 45% fan speed. That's almost nothing. No matter on air cooler, even on benchmark table if you stress card with graphically demanded games. I don't believe that temp could stay below 70C on 45% fan speed just like that all of the time and you play game hours max boost because low temperatures....except liquid cooling. Such situation is possible if you have 150fps in games and reduce them on 60 with Vsync and card boost on lower frequency example or similar situation some shorter older benchmark test.

I have a Corsair 1000D case with 15 fans so overheating even in summer is not an issue. This is not to advise you to get a larger case, this is simply to let you know that airflow can definitely affect your heat outcome.

Thanks all. How would one go about improving the airflow in the case? I have 2 x 120mm intake with rad and 2 x 120mm outtake as exhaust. What other options do I have short of using 2 x 140mm intake and moving the 240mm rad to the top as an exhaust. Don't really want to have to do this as I'd need new RAM and the fit would be tight. What other things can I do to improve or am I limited by my case?

15 fans is extreme number. That's huge ammount of cold air and could be compared with 3-4 fans on 5000 RPM for servers. Price of 15 quality fans is custom liquid cooling.

Room temp is ? Yes warmer air from CPU AIO is Not helping Corsair Carbide 275R case Positive air pressure cools best - [ more fans blowing In than Out ] The ACX type cooler dumps Most of the graphics card's Heat into the case ---> You need to get that heat out of the Case before it is "recycled" - causing a heat loop of ever increasing temps Notice the example GPU on Corsair page for this Case ---> shows a "Blower style" GPU --> they blow Most of the heat out the Back of the Case 1) easiest Test --> Run case fans / AIO fans @ 100% speed 2) add a 3rd fan to the front 3) Push /pull the AIO with 4 fans to improve airflow through AIO 4) Depending on Case & AIO - sometimes there is a way to "offset" the radiator when mounting up top to clear RAM

The fact is that rad has a huge airflow resistance, so you should try to check airflow through rad and and see that it is near zero. So you have only little intake and huge exhaust. That can cause your system heat up and also get dust inside case. I had a system with 3x120mm rad (tried to to 3x140 push + 3x120 pull - but got bad 140mm fans - stock had terrible clicking sound and new one got a huge vibration level, so I "ragequit" and just mounted 3x120) in front as intake and 3x140mm on back and top as exhaust. But even if I push 120mm fans to 2000rpm - there was little air that get through radiator, 140mm@1000rpm had much better airflow, so there was negative pressure inside case. I had much dust inside case plus no good airflow so even my ram was hot. One day I just swapped 2x140mm fans to front as intake (plus added one more) and 120mm fans with radiator to top as exhaust - that gave me much better airflow inside case: I had 3x140mm as intake and 140mm clear exhaust plus 3x120mm obstructed with rad exhaust that I guess can be count as 1x140mm. I got so much pressure inside my case that if I turn off one front fan - it will start spin in other direction by air exiting the case. And that gave me much better temperatures inside case: both gpu and motherboard (ram, pch etc). Later I switched to hybrid so right now I have 3x120mm + 2x120mm push-pull as exhaust and same 3x140mm as intake and everything works perfect.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, loads to try when I get home.
Will report back with temps on 100% GPU, AIO and case fans. Will also test normal operation with side of case removed.
Will try to see if I can fit an extra 120mm fan in the front next to the 240mm radiator but I don’t think it will fit.
I wish Corsair just added a few cm to the case height so the 240mm radiator could go on the top with good clearance from Mobo Heatsinks and RAM. I’m super frustrated as I keep having to buy new bits 😓
Thanks again chaps, super good advice.

Hi guys, I've not had a chance to test everything yet but I did the case side off test first. Temperature differences are outstanding (see below). Radiator top mounted as exhaust is not an option due to case limitations and adding additional 120mm in front wouldn't do much as would be 1/3 blocked by the rad reservoir. Case side on with GPU fans at 100%, intake AIO set to 40% and exhaust fans set to a collective RPM the same as the intake (for balanced airflow) - on nearly full load for a solid 15 mins, temperature did not dip below 70 degrees C. Case side off with GPU fans at 100%, intake AIO set to 40% and exhaust fans set to a collective RPM the same as the intake (for balanced airflow) - on nearly full load for a solid 15 mins, temperature did not rise above 54 degrees C. Case side off with GPU fans at 50%, intake AIO set to 40% and exhaust fans set to a collective RPM the same as the intake (for balanced airflow) - on nearly full load for a solid 15 mins, temperature did not rise above 67 degrees C. (this is the ideal!!!) I am assuming I can discount that the GPU is bad and that this sounds like it's the airflow in my case that is absolutely dreadful. Please see config below, any assistance with airflow is seriously appreciated as I feel really damn lost at the mo. Deepcool Captain 240mm AIO set to 40% which is about 1000 RPM as anything more is noisy. 2 x 120mm Silent Wings 3 PWM fans as exhausts, set to 30% each (about 500 RPM each) which matches the intake RPM for balanced cooling I tried ramping these up with mixed results at first but regardless of what I try, after a while, the GPU temps start climbing again and every combination of speeds eventually resulted in around a 73C temp on the card. I tried AIO on 70% (1500RPM) w/exhaust each on 1100RPM, initially looked good but after 10-15m gaming, it started climbing again. Seems my case is accumulating heat over time and even though I would expect warmth, my case front is hot to the touch, so I think there's something that's not doing its job in there. Would anyone have a slight clue on how to sort this out? I've seen lots of people with their AIO, rad & case fans in exactly the same config but my temps are pretty crap. Should I put this all in a different case?! I'm going to bed, it's been a long day and a bloody long evening

Put the AIO up top as exhaust and leave the front as intake so your case gets cooler air instead of the exhaust from your AIO. Bump up the air flow to the front as much as you can in tolerable audibles.

It won't fit there with my RAM and Mobo heatsink. Corsair advertise it as suitable but don't mention it's RAM and board dependent. Unless they make slim fans?

Great job testing. You need to install a good strong fan in the bottom front 120mm spot, probably a Noctua Industrial F12 PWM 2K rpm (3K if you're feeling frisky), A12 if you need quiet. Even though it's partially obstructed all the air from it will dump straight into the front fans of the GPU. You could move your existing top-back fan to that spot to try it out, even that alone may work well enough to get you over the hump.

Thanks for the reply! The issue I can see with putting the 120mm at the bottom is that not only would it be 1/3 obstructed by the radiator, the case design means that the cool air would shoot straight into the PSU shroud/HDD area as opposed to into the main chamber.

I'm going to have to buy more fans to facilitate that, which is fine. Can you point me towards quiet 120mm fans suitable for rad use?

Noctua A12s are quiet and one of the best. Pricey but well worth it. Don't forget, it's best to use the same fans all around since some fans have different audibles, blade designs, etc. I'm personally not a fan of their color scheme but you might be able to hold off a bit for their black version fans but not sure when those will be out and if they'll be the same model.

Thanks guys. Going to run this evening with my fans at what I would consider good noise levels with the case front off to see if it makes a difference. I'm happy to change things out until this thing runs a bit quieter and cooler... I've attached a link with some images below just to make sure I'm not being stupid with airflow etc. Also a pic of the space for the extra 120mm which I think may not be worthwhile. https://imgur.com/gallery/KR3KtF4

Are you sure that radiator will not fit on top panel? It seems that you have clearance for 120mm fan on top of your 120mm fan, that is close to radiator thickness.

It's the fact the RAM isn't low profile that prevents that, though I'll try and see if I can fit it later. If that worked, I have 2 x 140mm SW3 that I could bang in the front. I think it's the fact that most builds I see have AIO on front intake that made me wonder why mine seems significantly hotter/louder than everyone else reports. Maybe I'm being too fussy with noise, just hard spending this much on a PC when the noise is a little more than you're comfortable with!

well, you should try to check it. You can measure rad thicknes and if it is near 25mm - just get two 120mm fans and try to place it on top as it is radiator and fan. If it will fit near ram - best solution is to mount rad on top and get clean intake: both 2x140mm or 3x120mm would be fine.

Bummer it's not a Corsair AIO otherwise I would have said to just buy the NZXT GPU bracket for it and use the 240mm for GPU cooling while purchasing a single 120mm for your CPU. That would fit in that case since you're pretty limited in some sense with space and design.
Always remember the smaller the case, the more sacrifices.

Looking at the Deepcool website, the thickness of the 240 Pro radiator is 27mm.

Good point, though this case doesn't seem particularly small. I think a change in fan config is my next step. At least if this evening I game with the front cover off and temps are no different, I don't need to worry about trying a mesh case..!

Bluegilluk Thanks for the reply!
The issue I can see with putting the 120mm at the bottom is that not only would it be 1/3 obstructed by the radiator, the case design means that the cool air would shoot straight into the PSU shroud/HDD area as opposed to into the main chamber.
I looked at your case in detail, which is why I recommended the Noctua fan with good static pressure performance in obstructed applications. It's not like you're trying to use a house fan to flow air through an air compressor line. Even partially obstructed there's plenty of opening for a good fan to move air into the case, the air will flow up over the PSU (tape off any big shroud gaps) and around the cpu cooler. Obviously move the CPU cooler up as far as possible. YOU NEED TO PUT A FAN IN THE BOTTOM SPOT. That is the only thing that will deliver fresh air to the GPU and it will significantly out flow any fans passing through a radiator, even push pull. Bluegilluk Looking at the Deepcool website, the thickness of the 240 Pro radiator is 27mm.
So it is very close to standart fan thickness - 25mm (but some fans could be 30mm or even 32-38mm :)). So try to get 2 or 4 120mm old fans, tape them together or just hold them together and you can make a model of your radiator with fans and with that model you can check if you can fit radiator on top and how much clearance you have, where you can fit it.
