Haven't messed with overclocking in years... but I'm familiar with clock speeds and multipliers. Looking for a mild (safe) overclock on a 7940x on an X299 FTW K. Running a Corsair H80i V2 (single fan) cooler, CPU idles in the mid 20c's right now. Not sure where to start. I grabbed the ELeetx util, but I've seen where a few people suggest not using it. Where to start in CMOS?

web search your: chipset, MB & CPU with something like "overclock guide" Make sure you have an accurate way to monitor temps Make an Image of your Boot drive, disconnect all other drives -- if your OC goes crazy bad, you would not be the first person to corrupt the boot drive

From personal experience, heat is going to be a huge issue. I'm not sure a single radiator AIO will sufficiently cool the CPU under extended periods of load, especially with an overclock. With these CPUs, AVX and AVX-512 will be extremely taxing and I typically set my offsets to -3 and -5 respectively. When I started with an OC on my 7820X, I set the offset to the max Boost speed (4.3) on all cores and set voltage to 1.3. I then lowered the voltage bit by bit until it became unstable and put the voltage back up by a tiny bit. That was my mild overclock solution. The Intel Turbo Boost 3 clock (4.5) was what I then moved up to for all cores for my streaming / gaming overclock and repeated the same process. For the 7940X, I would say start with 4GHz - 4.2 even though your boost is 4.3 simply because the cooling solution you have may not be able to handle the amount of heat that may be output by the CPU. Please keep in mind however, this is just my method and suggestions. Depending on the motherboard and your system specs, you may want to overclock in different ways and with different values. Let us know how it goes! :) -Jacob B.

Oh, I did - I can google with the best of them - but only saw articles on 7960x, 7900x, 7920x, etc. Didn't know if those would be safe to use on a 7940x.

Since you have one of our X299 motherboards, I would highly suggest that you go visit this page https://xdevs.com/guide/e299ocg/Gives you an extensive guide on overclocking our boards, you will definitely learn a thing or two. It is definitely the Bible of EVGA X299 Overclocking :) Good Luck! Edit: My apologies, I didn't notice that CoolGTX had already linked this page.
