BIOS 2.05/2.06/2.08/2.14 Updates

  • Update CPU microcode for Intel security
This BIOS is intended to update the CPU microcode to increase security related to the reported Spectre vulnerability for processors used on X79 motherboards.  This microcode update is expected to be used in conjunction with related patches from your Operating System or VMM to ensure complete protection from reported vulnerabilities.

Windows Installation
  • Download the correct .zip file below for your motherboard:
         150-SE-E789-KR - EVGA X79 Dark - v2.14
         151-SE-E779-KR - EVGA X79 Classified - v2.08
         151-SE-E777-KR - EVGA X79 FTW - v2.06
         132-SE-E775-KR - EVGA X79 SLI - v2.05
  • First go into your BIOS and load defaults, save and exit
  • Close all open programs.
  • Go into the folder where you unzipped this package and double-click update.bat
  • Press Y to start the flash process
  • DO NOT TURN OFF POWER OR RESET DURING THE FLASH PROCESS
  • After the flashing is finished, the system will automatically shut down. Then power on again and go into BIOS to setup.
  • NOTE: If flash box immediately closes after flash attempt, the flash may need to be run from a CMD prompt with administrator privileges or DOS version.

BIOS Installation
  • Extract the contents of .zip file to USB flash drive (must be formatted as FAT32)
  • Reboot the machine and go into the system BIOS
  • From the BIOS, navigate to the Save & Exit tab and open "Select BIOS File."
  • Select the .bin file you wish to flash.

[Note - These BIOS updates were originally uploaded on 4/16.  There have been no releases since 4/16.]

Hi there! I have the X79 DARK, and I can not find any information about the BIOS switch. Does the computer have to be off? On? Can it be switched while in Windows? I'm not a noob, I just need a little bit more information, cause I don't want any mistakes. Thanks in advance,
    Matt

You can switch to a different BIOS position while in Windows.  If you plan to flash a new BIOS in Windows, make sure to load BIOS defaults prior to flashing.

The BIOS selector switch is circled in blue in the lower right corner of the board...

Thanks. I am currently on BIOS position 3, which is at 2.13. The CPU is an i7-4820K, and I have not tested the other two BIOS settings. I do not wish to corrupt my current setting. If I switch to a different position, and flash in Windows, will I have an issue? Or should I test the other two settings first, then decide which to flash? I'll put a link below with pics of my system.

If you want to maintain your current BIOS with all it's settings & profiles, do this:

Go in to your BIOS and load system defaults.  Now restart and go in to Windows.  Now move the BIOS selector switch to one of the other positions.  When you do the flash now, it will flash to the new BIOS chip.

When the flash is done, the system will shut down automatically.  You can start it up and go in to your BIOS and it will have the BIOS rev you just flashed.  You can set things up from there...

Thanks a lot for your advice, b dary, as it worked great! Had to go through a couple of restarts to get it up and running, but it's working. One thing I noticed is that the CPU temp reading is now at 30C at idle, when it used to be about 14C. Just wondering if either the previous BIOS (2.13) or the new BIOS (2.14) was/is reporting the temperature incorrectly. I have verified that my system is now protected from Spectre/Meltdown. Unfortunately, it is running a bit slower because of the updates. I guess I'll have to get that E5-1680 V2 to compensate! LOL! I was planning on upgrading the CPU anyway! Is there a CPU in the XEON line that you would recommend?

    You're welcome...

30C sounds about right.  14C had to be a bad reading unless your room's ambient temp was/is under 55F or so.

As far as XEON chips go, I never looked at those really, so can't recommend anything there.  But the 4820K is a decent CPU.  Personally, I wouldn't change it out unless I was upgrading the whole platform.  Unless you have your own reason for needing/wanting a XEON over what you have now.

The extra cores/threads will really improve 3DSMAX and AutoCAD. My GTX 1080 does great with the real time viewports, but final rendering is all done with the CPU. And the 1600 V2 series have unlocked multipliers, and overclock very stable. Should be able to keep it at 4.5GHz no problem. And with 8C/16T, it should fly through the workloads!
Again, thanks for you help, and have a great day!

Makes sense then...  At least you have a decent CPU to hold you over while you research which XEON you want to get...

A used Xeon can be a great bang for the buck CPU if you get the right one, only thing to remember is they usually have had a very high use life since most of those server and work stations were 24/7 machines, shouldn't matter to much since xeons generally the best silicone of the wafer.

That's OK, because my system stays on 24/7, and I'm running a massive cooling loop in a large case (Corsair AIR 540)
And the price for an 8 core XEON is only a little bit more than the 4960X 6 core. I could also go up to an E5-2697 V2 12c/24t, but the 2600 series have locked multipliers. And the only way to OC it would be to adjust the base clock, but only by 5-7 MHz, and that may not be stable.

Just look in Support, drivers. Select the motherboard tab, then use the drop down menus. You will see it under BIOS and it will have a very recent date. I just updated mt X79 DARK.

From my understanding, the 132-SE-E175-KR update is for SLI.  I have the X79 SLI and used this BIOS update without issue.
    Cheers.

PuLvErInE The BIOS for the SLI is version 2.05. Just be sure if you are going to do the flash in Windows, that you get the BIOS flash for your version of Windows. It appears that EVGA has done updates for all of their old MB's.

Hi PuLvErInE, I seem to have left that out of the list at the top, but it has been available on the Drivers/Downloads page.  I'll add it to the top here, as well.

    Thanks for catching that!

Edit:  Sorry, it was there.  I just mislabled SLI as Micro.  Error corrected in the OP.

This is just awesome. I installed this firmware, and it will no longer boot. Yes, I reset bios to default settings. I am able to get I to the Bios, and I can change the settings, but it will no longer boot. I am getting a B2 bios code in the bottom right of the screen. I looked it up, and its telling me that my processor memory controller has took a dump on me.

    I need some help please.
My board is the X79 Dark, 4930K CPU running stock speeds. 32Gigs rams. SSD 500gig Samsung 840EVO drive.

    Fixed, I think.

I was finally able to boot into Windows 10 64-bit.
I had to disable CSM in the bios for it to boot. Not really sure what CSM is, but I know that if you have any settings in there that are not correct. It will hate you and cause nothing but problems

    That should resolve your issue...

After you set your BIOS to default settings and flash a new BIOS revision, you should always go back in the BIOS to set/verify certain things are set the way you had them originally.  Like AHCI is set in the SATA config, and CSM is either enabled or disabled depending on how you had it set prior to flashing the BIOS.

Also, don't forget to set your ram back to it's rated spec if you had it that way before.  Either with XMP or manually...

    Welcome to the Forums...

I recall having an issue trying to use a USB drive to install Windows from as well (on X79).  I ended up burning the iso file to a DVD instead and it worked on the first try.  Not saying it's impossible to do it with a USB drive, but I do remember others having some trouble on X79 trying the same thing.

    No problem, happy to help.

I used an internal.  An external may work as long as you are able to set it as your first boot device in the BIOS.

Do you have your BIOS set to default settings?  If not, use the clear CMOS button on the board or back I/O panel before trying to install the OS.
Are you trying an internal optical drive or external?  If using an external drive, is it plugged into a USB 2.0 port?
