Hi everyone, first of all please accept my apologies for asking a question that might have been already asked a lot of times... I did spend a good deal of time last night reading the forums, but I just want to make sure that my assumption is (could be) right before moving on... So I've just got the GTX 1080 SC yesterday, installed it in my computer (an i7 3930k on an ASUS P9X79 board, running Windows 10 64bit, all updates) and after doing a clean install of the drivers, I found that it was just as slow as my old GTX 970. I am mostly doing 3d work, using GPU renderers, in both Maya and 3dsMax. The GPU does help massively here, but in my case, the GTX 1080 only works about as fast as the old GTX 970 that it replaced. From what I've been reading, I can somehow understand that my platform will never allow the 1080 to fully perform to the level it could/should? I've used the nvidia registry hack too, bios is up to date, anything I could have tried, I did. No success at all. The only thing I haven't tried is to put the card in a different slot, but it's now sitting in the one recommended by the mainboard (the first blue slot) Any thoughts, would be much appreciated. Once again, sorry if this is an ever-repeating thread... I've tried looking around, I'm normally able to sort things out by myself, been building my own computers/fixing issues with them for quite some time, but lately I haven't got as much time for this as before :) Cheers for any help/advice you might have. All best! Virgil

Hi and welcome to the forums... Not sure what's going on there, but I would start with doing this: Run DDU using the "safe mode" method > http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.htmlThen reinstall the driver of your choosing, but only install graphics & PhysX. Only install the other components (GFE, 3D items, etc) if you actually need them. See if that changes anything for you...

Did you remember to reset 3ds Max viewport settings to Nitrous?

hi HeavyHemi, thanks for your reply - I was just referring to GPU rendering (like Redshift) - in those tests (vray RT also) the times are basically identical to the ones I get with the GTX 970... Even the Activeshade seems to be just about as fast as the old card, which was extremely annoying. The display works fine, though animation playbacks are just as quick/slow as the 970. Regardless of using Direct3d or OpenGL (I tend to use Direct3D in Max) It's the first time ever I swap a video card with a better one and see zero improvement...

Thanks for the advice guys, I followed the indications for running DDU, ran it in Safe Mode, cleaned the driver, reinstalled just the Graphics Driver, my GPU-Z now looks like this, when the card is under full load: Ran my usual tests - exactly the same as before, unfortunately... No change at all. Dammit :( Cheers, anyway!

Hi Sajin, My CPU isn't doing much in these, as it's mainly GPU that does the work. The GPU Core clock is reaching about 2000 Mhz Memory Clock goes up to 1128.4 Mhz Hope this heps... thanks, Virgil

What tests are you running to come to the concollusion that the results are basically the same performance as the former card?

hi AHowes, I'm running some GPU rendering in 3ds Max and Maya - those are using only the GPU(s) that are in the system. The faster the GPU, the quicker these should be... and usually they were, when I switched from a 560 to the GTX 970, previously. This time, however, it's exactly the same - and it's not a problem with the renderer, because I've seen tests online, comparing the 970 and the 1080 and there was a difference, which was my main reason for investing in the card too. thanks, Virgil

I have no experience with those to compare.. can you try 3dmark firestrike and timespy benchmarks? Those will give people some idea if your card is performing where it should. I'm sure theres other free benchmarks out there that would do the same but I dont know of any off the top of my head.
Sure others can chime in.

Also after the test is over you can compare the results in the link shown. Dont really pay much attention to the overall scores but the graphics score. Right that down. Then you can compare that with the other results you see online. The overall results depend heavily on CPU. Fast multi core cups get an higher overall score.

Hi guys, thanks for your replies. somethingc00l- I've ran those two benchmarks as well, the furryball one seems a bit slow (0.81x overall) but it seems that it's only by a fraction, whereas the Redshift one looks to be very close to their reference scores. Saying that though, I see that the 1070 is almost as fast, in their score chart... I did some digging/testing these days with different GPU renderers and found out that some of them do a better job with the card and some just don't... not sure of the reason, but for now I'm happy to keep the card, I was really hoping that it wasn't faulty or underperforming. I'm thinking about getting a new PSU (mine's only 660W, though a Seasonic platinum one) and re-adding my old 970 in the system as well, as it will help, most modern GPU renderers know how to use multiple cards, it seems. Thanks for all your help, guys, much appreciated!
