I am considering the Vive package right now too.
I also am staring at the Amazon 799.99 price, and don't know if it is worth it.

I have heard the Vive is the way to go if you want to get into VR.
    Pricey for sure!

Oculus Rift hands down, especially with the current sale going on. The Rift plus Touch bundle is amazing.
I have had mine since Jan 15th, and have not gamed any on my monitor since, it is just not the same.
The Rift and Vive specs are about the same, the Vive has a slight edge in large room scale, but the Rift has come a long way in that department as well. My " play area" is about 9ft x 12 ft and the Rift handles it quite well.

The resolution is a step back in this current generation, but the immersion and overall experience at least for most far outweigh that issue. Elite Dangerous by all reports is fantastic in the Rift. I do mostly flight sims and have a HOTAS setup ( flight stick), and have a blast with them in my Rift.
There are also some great Touch supported games available in the Oculus Store that are quite good, some of which come free with the activation of the Touch controllers. Nothing like standing up and moving, playing a first person shooter, and you hear a bad guy come up behind you and you have to quickly turn around to try and get a shot off. All of the positional tracking is 1:1.

Think of it this way, rather than looking at a game on your monitor,  it is like you are actually in the game with everything full size and all around you wherever you look.
I personally love it and find myself gaming more now than I ever have.

Now having said all this, I can say from my observations the vast majority of folks feel the way I do about this current generation of VR. There are a few however, that find the resolution too bad for what they want and are disappointed.  These seem to be few and far between, and usually guys that are gaming on a very high resolution monitor.

IMHO with the current large price difference, the Vive would not be worth it. Unless having a very large room scale experience is what you are after. Other than that, the Rift is just as good if not better than the Vive. Back when I bought mine the first of this year, they were equal in price. But Oculus has recently really been doing a lot to get more aggressive on pricing and increase market share.

I think Oculus Rift is a good choice right now, especially after the huge price drop, and now they have proper motion controls.
