I'm not a custom watercooling aficionado, yet the 1080 Ti Black is identical to the 1080 Ti FE except for a fuse - which I'm guessing won't interfere. Backplates tend to trap heat and increase temps without thermal pads transferring heat to the plate. Is it just for looks? I don't know about compatibility - try it and see? A 780 Ti is about 25% slower than a 980 Ti which is about 25% slower than a 1080 Ti - in games. Yes, in some cases quite a bit more such as, but not limited to, DX12 and in VR. As a guess, anywhere from 50 to 100% faster overall. Your 5930K @4.4GHz shouldn't be an issue at 1440P. Just remember that there is ALWAYS a bottleneck in any PC, no matter how fast it is.

Thanks for your answers i was planning to get the backplate because i thought it helped cool the card but if its only for aesthetics i wouldn't bother

I just typed in "780 Ti vs 980 Ti vs 1080 Ti 1440p" in Google search and came up with a ton of hits and video comparisons. Here's one for GTA 5: https://youtu.be/dUNepLhiYNU

If block is compatible then NO you don't need a backplate. It was proven like gazillion times that backplates offer no benefits whatsoever to cooling. Under certain conditions they improve structural rigidity, but only that. On certain boards (*cough* X99 Classified *cough*) backplate will interfere with I/O shield in the first slot and it will be totally impossible to remove RAM without unplugging the card first. If you have case with either horizontal motherboard, Reverse ATX or 90% ATX (think Silverstone or some of new Thermaltake models) backplate is completely useless. It will only trap heat under the shroud while proving no cooling benefits and it won't improve rigidity of the card - there is no need for that in such systems. Leave back side naked, let the airflow/ambient temp do the rest. Just allow card to breathe, simple as that. Speaking from rather broad experience - except one card where backplate was included in the box (and it was mandatory to mount it) every other card I have is running just fine without "backplatezation".

Alright sounds good i always assumed that backplates helped with cooling even evga or ek mention something about helping it cool the vram lol no idea why they'd say that but guess i won't be using a backplate then thanks ypsylon

Just for LOLs how you can create bad 1080Ti (from Zotac) with custom cooler by Gamers Nexus. Watched this moments ago and you get perfect example how pointless backplates really are (~12:30 time stamp). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiLSxhyiZss

I've got the same card an EK Backplate so it's compatible. Main reason I got the backplate is to protect that side of the PCB plus it looks really cool.

Aquacomputer has an active backplate with a heat pipe which is an interesting spin on the subject.
