This has been the case for the majority of consoles. The idea being get gamers to purchase subsidized hardware and then generate revenue from licensing games and more expensive games. It's also why when console fanboys argue their hardware is better than comparatively priced PC hardware they aren't acknowledging that the hardware cost is being heavily subsidized by manufacturers. On the PC that isn't the case.

It's only ever true at launch, they make plenty of profit off of them down the line as parts get cheaper.

But who needs a X model if games like Destiny 2 will run with 30fps. That´s so sad because the new console is quite strong.

For a console, Id rather the game look better and play at 30fps. Than to run at 60fps and look like total garbage. Or worse, frame jumps between 45 and 60. Constant 30fps looks and plays better than fluctuating frames imo.

Xbox has to take a loss just to be able to say that they can compete with Pc, If you ask me I wouldn't pay more than 500$ for this because I dont get steam, or a choice of peripherals, or much control over game settings.

They probably don't need to profit off of the hardware. Selling games is a given, but they also make money off of subscription services, and advertising. You also can't upgrade the hardware (short of buying the next model), or configure it for that matter. Backwards compatibility, hasn't been great for consoles, but I hear they actually did that with the upcoming Xbox. PC backwards compatibility is usually a lot simpler. You might need an emulator for really old games (like DOS games for example), but you can often run decently old games natively. I suppose console still has it's niche though, if you aren't very technical, or don't have / don't want to spend the money for a gaming PC. I can see why people buy them.

That is essentially what consoles are. They are like phones, if you want to upgrade you need to buy a newer version. Plus with the low price and accessibility, they are ideal for low badget gamers, parents or people who enjoy playing in a couch and a big TV.

You cant put everyone in that camp like so. I have my gaming PC in sig along with a PS4 Pro and Nintendo Switch. Why? Because I can and enjoy them on a 65" 4k tv. I respect and welcome what each platform brings to the table.

I didn't mean it that way. I'm just saying consoles are generally cheaper and more accessible. I have a PS 4 as well and a 3 DS, and will eventually be getting a Switch. I have them mostly for exclusive titles, and to play multiplayer with my friends on that platform. The 3 DS has the benefit of being mobile, as does the Switch.

If you guys remember when the Xbox 360 launched it was sold at a loss, some estimates were up to $130 per console. If the Xbox One is break-even then MS is already raking it in by comparison.
Have water, will cool.
