So, for some of you, this is probably a silly question, and even though I can not find it, I'm sure that if I looked hard enough the answer is out there somewhere... But I'd rather just ask people who already know. I'm considering (very heavily) upgrading from my wonderful 1080 FTW ICX to a 1080 Ti. However, I've noticed something, and it has caused me to think about something that I never thought I'd question: just how important is clock speed? My current 1080 has a 1721MHz Base Clock, and the 1080 Ti's that are about to come out April have a 1569MHz Base Clock. So in this case, is the Ti... actually slower? Or is it still going to be faster, even with the lower clock speed, because of the newer architecture? If the clock speed is actually slower and the memory on the card is less compared to the FTW 2... is it even an upgrade? Or should I take a risk and hope that the 1080 Ti FTW releases within 90 days from now? I've also though that higher clock speeds and more memory were simply better, but perhaps I was missing a part of the picture? Thanks in advanced for any and all help and input!

Many other things to consider then the clock speed. http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-1080-Ti-vs-GeForce-GTX-1080Yes the 1080 Ti is abit faster then the 1080. Sorta like a v6 vs a v8 engine, they may reach the same RPM(clock speed) but the V8 will have more horsepower (overall gpu performance). I believe its somewhere around 20-25% faster then the 1080 overall. What where you referring about the memory. The Ti has more 8vs11gb of it, at a faster speed. Where you planing on stepping up?

So, I currently have the GTX 1080 FTW2, and I was planning on stepping up to the FE, or the SC2 if my 90 days don't near their end before that one comes out for step up. But I noticed that the base clock and boost clocks listed on that are actually lower than the FTW2, which I found odd. And the SC2 has 1556MHz Base Clock-- which just seems low compared to 1721MHz (Which actually, I've managed to get to 2000MHz boost clock). You are right on the memory, I missed the extra digit and just looked at what it started with. Opps. Thanks for the information!

It does looks silly / weird with the *low* clock speed on the 1080ti. Even the 1070 SC got high er. - 1594MHz Base Clock
- 1784MHz Boost Clock
But hey, anything to confuse the consumer

As Sajin said, the 1080 has 2560 cuda cores and the 1080 Ti has 3584. That is important. Also, keep in mind that the 1080 Ti has gpu boost 3.0 too. So, in the same way that your 1080 FTW2 has a base clock of 1721MHz but boosts to around 2000Mhz, the 1080 Ti has a 1556 MHz base clock but will boost much higher. There are screenshots of people overclocking the 1080 Ti to 2000Mhz+ in this thread.

I can tell you with my 1080TI FE on air (before putting the waterblock on) boosted to about 1875-1900mhz at stock and it absolutely stomped all over my 1080 classified. I don't throw my overclock numbers in just because the distance between the two cards greatly increases in performance metrics.

I'm very grateful for all the answers! I figure that I wasn't getting the whole picture, as I've seen the benchmarks of the 1080 Ti and I've seen it listed as much as 30% better than the 1080. I've known cuda cores were "a thing" but I didn't realize how much of a speed difference they actually made! And if the founders edition gets almost to 2000mhz anyway, it looks like it actually isn't as wide a gap in clock speeds as it first appears. Now I've just got to figure out if it is worth it to me to give up the ICX cooling for a card that runs faster but hotter...
